Missing washers etc.

    I needed to replace the backwheel and carefully put the washers and little bits god knows where. Are they essential? Bike shop guy seemed to think the nuts I had were fine on their own

    washers are essentially there to stop you defacing or marking the bike with the nut, although the washer will do the same, it also stops the nut from digging itself into the frame on your bike, you can get away without them, but essentially, you were given poor advice from a sloppy workman, who could have quite easily given you some washers
