I help out with our local athletics club (Emerald). I did the level 1 course recently and I will be doing the high jump with our kids next week. I will read up on my notes again but I know that there are some experienced coaches/high jumpers out there - any tips on coaching the high jump to kids (aged 12 - 12 yrs approx), who are at beginner level?
    thanks!

The young ones love HJ. With beginners though I'd always start them off with a soft (flexi) bar so they can jump without fear of hurting themselves on the bar.

I hope you'd get them straight onto 'flopping' and ignore anyone that says it's dangerous for youngsters, which is nonsense. Get them to stand on the bed and throw themselves backwards onto their shoulders, feet in the air, to get the idea.

Once they've got the hang of which foot to take off on, it's relatively straightforward. A major key is angle of approach so the jumper is turning as he/she jumps - off a hockey-stick shaped approach.

Good luck, hope you get the weather for it, or can find an indoor place!

These could be useful too but the points Roymc makes are very good. When I was a kid aged 10 or 11 I could never master the HJ and thinking back it was because I was never confident doing the flop so getting them flopping at an early age is great advice.
