Am in the market for a second hand car - looking for something small and am debating between POLO and Ibiza - both 5 door 1.4 -this would be my first car - so nothing to elaborate

Just want to know the pros and cons for both and why one would favour one over the other - thinking of cars from 2004 up

have been looking at carzone and merlin car auctions for the two for the past week and there are a few there

    thanks

Ibiza definitely. Same car but better looking both in and out. Would probaly be slightly cheaper too.

I'm actually selling an 04 Ibiza but tis only a 1.2 so not what your after.

The Ibiza and Polo are essentially the same car underneath (Same Chassis, Same Engines, Same Parts)

I prefer the look of the Ibiza and it's probably cheaper or better specced than the Polo.

I'd go for the Ibiza and esp for the 1.4 100bhp engined one, its a very solid car and has won Top Gear mini of the year once or twice.

This one is fairly good spec wise.

I'd nearly go for the ibiza if i were you and i would'nt rule out the 1.2. theyre all 65bhp(Rather than 55bhp or 65bhp in the polo) so there grand for most needs. It'd be a nice bit lighter on fuel than the 1.4 too. Sister used to have one and she consistently got about 50mpg

Only problem with that one is that its a 3 Door - but thanks

the SEAT's are a bit cheaper than the Polo - wonder is it just because of the VW Brand

If your choosing between two cars which are essentialy the same why not consider also the Skoda Fabia.
Same as the ibiza & the polo, decent size boot & perhaps better value overall.

Ibiza Ibiza Ibiza! Cheaper and better speced than equiviliant Polo and they look better as poster says get the 1.4 100bhp sport its a nippy little car and you can get it in 5dr

All 2004-2008 Facelift Models have a Different bumper

    The 1.2 2004+ has a 70bhp engine

Chance would be a fine thing!

If you are looking at those two cars, all you want to decide on is value for money and looks. Both are essentially the same thing.

I'd go for the Ibiza over the Polo, despite it having a hollow feeling dash, small gripe though, as it has much more flair than the VW.

The Ibiza is a far better looking car than the dated polo , dont know how vw can charge such a premium for esentially the same underpinnings

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

To be fair, they don't charge much of a premium, the Polo has gradually got more equipment over the years, there isn't much difference in the new prices and the Polo has slightly better residuals than the Ibiza,
Given that SEAT have made a dog's dinner of the new Ibiza, and the new Fabia is so lardy, the Polo is the safe option of the VAG offerings, it's way outdated at this stage, but it's so inoffensive that nobody notices.

The new price for a 1.4 Ibiza is 17,170 and its 21,140 for the "older" polo. A big 3970 euro difference.

The reason they have slightly better residuals is due to them being slightly more expensive.

The answer to every motoring question in Ireland is not always automatically "Buy something Japanese".
