I am in the process of looking to buy a new car. I am going to buy a 2008 car to take benefit of new car taxes based on CO2 emmissions. At the moment i am torn beween an Audi A3 1.9TDI sportsback or a VW Gold 1.9tdi Match. I will be buying out of UK as they are good bit cheaper.

I know that A3 is about 4,000 dearer than the Golf. Is the A3 as good value as the Golf. I intend to hold on to the car for 3-4 years.

    All advice welcome!

    IMO A3 > Golf.

It looks better both inside and out.

Any reason you are going for the 1.9 in the Audi?

The VRT % is lower for the 1.9TDi (16%) compared to the 2.0TDi (20%)for the Audi A3.

Is there much extra space in the A3 compared to the Golf?

None at all. Possibly a slightly bigger boot in the Audi, due to it's "stretched" tail end. The main cabin however would probably feel a bit more cramped than the Golf - lower slung roof, etc.

You should try stretching to the 2.0TDI if possible, that old 1.9 is rough.

+1 on the 2.0 TDi. Even if you can get this engine in the Golf it would be a far superior car. The 1.9 is an old engine. Its reliable and powerful enough for most but it will really let a decently specced car down

no real difference, the interior/exterior of the A3 swung it for me when I got mine.
It really is a nice place to be if you get the sports seats. You don't see as many
of them as golfs but they are still pretty common. It's up to you do you think the
aestehtics are worth the extra. If you keep it for 3-4 years you probably won't
make mure more at trade in that on the golf, prob 500-1k. So you will lose most
    of the difference.

I was pretty happy with mine, had it for 2 years and had no troubles.

I would go with the A3 if you could find one with a great spec for a good price. But I'm guessing you will find it easier to get a better specced golf for your money.

When buying my Golf Gt I was looking at an A3 but due to their premium over the Golf it would have meant a basic spec A3.

Both are great cars inside and out though. I would eventually trade up for an S3 instead of an R32 though if that says anything.
