    Hey,

Hope someone can help me out. I am looking to go for a weeks break to France. There will be two of us and we are hoping to take the ferry over there and use our own car and use it to drive around for the week. I have a few questions.

    1. Which ferry is the best to go with ?
    2. Which is the best port to come in through ?
    3. Do you recommend booking a cabin for the over night sailing?
    4. With regards car insurance, are we insured to drive in France or will I have to get additional cover ?

Question 1: There are too many variables for a straight answer. I have used Irish Ferries, Celtic Link, and Brittany Ferries. They have each been the best choice at that time for that trip.

    2. Ports are ports. Roscoff is the smallest; Le Havre is the largest. It really depends on where you want to go once you land.

    3. I once sailed without getting a cabin. Never again.

    4. I agree with biko that you should check with your insurer, and that you will probably find that you are covered; you should also give your insurer the exact dates when you will be in France, and if you think you might be tempted to cross into another country, make sure that you say that to your insurer also.

We drive over and back a lot, which company and port will depend on where you are travelling from and to. We take Brittany Ferries from Cork to Roscoff or Irish Ferries from Rosslare to Roscoff or Le Harve. (different sailings for diffeent days). Roscoff is really easy to get through and get back to. Yes, get a cabin, and if you have any tendency to be sick get the best cabin you can afford. The Brittney Ferries boat tends to dock at about 7am, a great time to just wake up and get off the ferry. I did prefer the food, cabins and service on Brittney Ferries but with the new Irish ferries boat its now much the same.

look at price, when you need to travel and location....and get a a cabin

    enjoy your trip
