I am looking to join a club in the Limerick area, i have played for a few years now and again and want to join a club to get more practice and hopefully improve.

Looking at maybe joining East Clare Bodyke as i have a friend who is a member there, anyone have any thoughts on this?

Also any other suggestions for clubs to join in the area?

I'm not sure if it's convenient for you but Newcastle West is a super course and I think you can join there at the moment for around €1500. I'm not a member there but I have played a few open comps there and bought a few clubs from the pro shop from time to time. All in all great value for money and only around 25 mins from Limerick.

dromoland (more accessible than east clare gc) have got some good deals at the minute

east clare is a good course tho - some real nice holes, lotta water features
they've done a lot of work down there in the last few years - clubhouse and other facilities are fairly average
bit of a bitch to get to tho

Dromoland has an entrance Fee of 7500 so i'll be giving that a skip ;)

Have to agree on getting to East Clare, don't want to ruin the car altogether...

a friend of mine joined there for significantly less just before christmas so i'd call down there to sus it out a bit
think he payed around half of the fee mentioned - given the club and facilities involved, i reckon its worth taking a small loan out for it if you can stretch it
great location like - last thing you want is to have to drive one-hour plus to a golf course, particularly if ur keen to get value for money over a given season

Ballykisteen is about 30 mins drive from Limerick and would be worth a look. Really nice course and I think joining fee is around €1500 at the moment (that also includes membership of the Gym and Swimming pool in the hotel adjoining the course).

I'd wait if I was you. Clubs are going to have to remove any joining fee levies over the coming years to attract new members. I know that the GUI are looking into initiatives to attract nomad golfers like yourself to join clubs, (article in yesterdays indo). I played Nenagh, Co Tipp over the weekend and I heard they dropped the levy for joining (call to confirm). I would expect many courses to follow.

I really like that course actually so will look again there. The one thing about it is that the last time i looked it was 1000 per year for green fee's which is a bit over the top!

Interesting, thanks for letting me know. I will call Nenagh to find out if that is the case, if so i'd be very interested as i heard that Nenagh was a really nice course.

royal rathbane as some of my mates like to call it is very central. only 5 minutes from the city centre. cheap membership. course is very average though. perfect for cheap gui membership and practicing.

Ya i had decided i would join there at the end of last year but they kept putting back the membership and i never got around to it

The one thing that puts me off is that the fee's are only slightly less than what you would pay at a good course. I know you don't have to pay the sign-up fee but as I want to join a course at some point i am thinking that i should pay the sign up fee now as they are reduced?

i know what you mean. its a good time to be joining a club. rathbane is fine for what it is but it isn't a course and place you'd be rushing to bring friends to play.

    Limerick county??
    Charleville??
    Small Adare??

You could try Castletroy but id say that it would be full.
Newcastle West is also a very good course but it would be close on a hours drive from the city. Try the gui website and they will tell you the courses that are open for membership.

I dunno how anyone could become a member of Rathbane. It's the worst golf course I have ever played on, it's right beside Southill too. Driving up to it is pretty scary :D

As a member of Charleville, I would reccommend Charleville. Only 20minutes from Limerick city. There's 27holes open pretty much all the time. We have good practice facilities and a driving range academy is in it's planning stages. I'm not too sure what the joining fee is, but I will find out. Generally, the members are very nice. Some seniors are a bit iffy, but that is to be expected :)

Cool I will give a call and ask about the entrance fee...
