Throttle issue on 99 polo

For the last month an a half I've been driving a 1.4 polo estate that had previously been idle for 2 years. It was driving fine about a week ago when I noticed a squeal most times when I depressed the accelerator even when stationary in neutral. Then at the weekend it started to idle between 1000 and 2500 rpm after a long drive.
I thought these 2 issues were related and removed the air box, while doing that I removed the ht leads from the plugs just to make sure they were seated properly and the idle dropped to 800-850 rpm and has been fine since, but the squeal is still there.
I'm thinking that the throttle body needs a good clean.
Does anyone have any other ideas? Does it also sound like the high idle problem is solved?
    Any help appreciated.

I wonder is it a perished vachume hose and what you are hearing is the air being drawn in. That would cause the incorrect idle.

Is there any chance that the squeal you mention could be the alternator belt slipping...........?

As for the throttle body, it's quite common for a lot of VWs to have a build up of dirt on the throttle body. This can be cleaned with a few spray's of cat-friendly carb cleaner as the engine is running - it's best to rev the engine while spraying to avoid cutting out. The throttle angle may need to be reset afterwards which will require a diagnosis tool.
