    Hi,

Is there anyway to check what speed I will get from different Broadband providers before I sign up?

I am on the Dooradoyle exchange in Limerick & I am tyring to decide between BT & Eircom. The both have different offerings but no point paying for 'up to 24Mb' when I will end up with less.

    Thanks,
    Tom

    Not a chance.

Since you're on Dooradoyle, try for Smart Telecom. Uncontended, no limits, and good price (for DSL).

DSL speeds will be dependent on distance from the exchange and line quality. Internal wiring in your house can also effect it. If you have decent dial up speeds, >33kbps, then that would be an indication of a reasonable line (and no line-splitter in place). If you never get 28k, then that's worrying.

The problem I have is that the land line is currently disconnected so need to pick a supplier to reconnect. As most of them sign you up to a contract I don't seem to have any way of knowing what the line speed is before I connect.

If the speed is really crap is it possible to terminate a contract on those grounds? I had a look at Smart & this does seem good. I won't be using the internet much so the 4mb would be perfect

First, yo need to get eircom to activate the line. It costs 25 euro. They'll give you a phone number and an account number. Use the phone number to check with Smart, and they'll tell you if it'll work or not.

I've never heard of anyone on the Dooradoyle exchange that failed Smart's check, they seem to have very good range on it. It works as far as Ballycummin, Cul Crannagh and Oakleigh Wood anyway, as I know people on it. I have it in Church Hill Meadows, at 7Mbps. My line syncs at 10Mbps, so that should be possible for me.

If your line can't handle it, they won't hold you to a contract, and you can cancel the line with eircom once again. You will forfeit the 25 activation fee, and possibly line rental for as long as it was active.

    Cheers!

Have line orderedw ith Eircom - they don't seem to tie you into a contract so no harm having the line. Need it for Sky mulitroom anyway!

So I suppose I now just need to wait till I have the number then I can do speed tests with the various providers.

Only problem I now have is the 12month contract! Oh well......
