    Hi

How does the ntl digital recorder compare to sky+. I have no experience of either but I have heard that the sky one is very good and easy to use but I haven't seen any comments on the NTL one. My Dad is looking to get one and has NTL at the moment.

    Thanks

    Dave

Main differences between NTL+ and SKY+
    • No Series Link on NTL
    • Menus are slow
    • Still a few bugs
    • No Series Link on NTL
    • Only record one program at a time.

But if NTL already in place, it will be a bit cheaper...

I've got it. Just used for basic recording of stuff.

    * No series link. Not really an issue for me, but would obviously be handy.

    * No bugs on mine that I can really say (but I stand to be corrected).

    * The pausing of Live TV is great. You can also rewind a live programme that you're watching (from when you started watching it).

    Hope that helps.

Thanks, sounds like it might do the job. He just wants something basic to replace the VCR

To be honest series link is what turns a DVR from a glorified VCR into an almost life changing device. The ability to easily set it to record the shows you are interested in and freeing you to watch what you want, when you want is priceless IMO.

Digital+ without series link is a joke IMO.

You need series link as stated, I'd highly recommend SkyHD+ can't go wrong with it.

agree with all the above - Series Link is the USP of Sky+ and DVRs in general - not having it makes NTL's box significantly inferior.

the one advantage NTL do have is UTV and the extra BBC channels (you can tune these in on Sky+ but you can't record them).

You listed "No series link on NTL" twice!!!! Cheeky ;)

Anyway, series linking and the ability to record two programs at once will be along shortly so you may as well go with ntl as you'll have the extra benefits soon plus it'll be cheaper than Sky.

We've been hearing this for 2 years. Tomorrow I am having someone coming to look at putting a communal dish in my apartment block. If it can be done easily and cleanly, goodbye NTL.

I would prefer to use NTL but they consistently disappoint, under perform and break their own deadlines. Sky, while I hate them, have an excellent product line up and are light years ahead of UPC.

Series link and Dual recording are nice to haves but in my mind the main advantages of DVR over VCR are
    1. there no need to mess with tapes (by far and away the best part for me)
    2. having your recorded programs in an easy to navigate library
    3. being able to pause live TV
    4. being able to watch recorded programs whilst recording another one.

I wouldn't even list "Pause live TV" as a feature of the UPC DVR. Anytime I have ever paused TV I can play it again no problem but there is no way you can pause again, fast forward or rewind it... any attempt to do so results in immediately being brought to INFO TV!!

    Excellent point. +1 for Sky.

I use it all the time and that has never happened to me yet (touch wood). It has been especially useful with the rugby where you can zip thru the breaks in play.

As I suspected most people seem to think the sky one is the best. But this is for my Dad and all he really wants is to be able to record the odd program without having to mess with tapes. He already has NTL and it is a cheaper option. He dosn't watch enough to need dual record. The pausing of live tv though he would probably use so I would be interested to hear if a lot of people have a problem with this on NTL.

I have NTL plus and its fine, Ive never had any problems pausing and rewinding and while theres no series link you can set a repeat record which is handy and most series are on at the same time every week anyway.

It is a bit cheaper but theres also the problem that when something goes wrong with it, you have better customer service with sky.
