    What sort of car and year is it?

    Little or no modern cars are stolen lately without the keys, no point in spending €1000's on an alarm system and then leaving the keys inside your front door of your house.

    If you tape €50 to the window they'll leave the car alone :D;)

    RM Car Alarm, good brand.

    Your car has an immobiliser so it cannot be hot wired so the only way to steal it is by taking the keys. You should get an alarm fitted as it can still be broken into to rob valuables so this will act as a deterant and also warm you if someone is at your car. The other main thing is to not leave anything in the car, especially on view as that is just asking for your window to be broken. It amazes me the amount of cars I see with sat navs on the windscreen etc while parked.

    So true, you'd be amazed how many cars are nicked with the high-tech 'coat hanger through the letter box' system :p

    Some advice courtest of the AA;
    Park somewhere safe – your garage, a well–lit, busy street or a car park displaying the 'Park Mark' logo of the ACPO Safer Parking Scheme.

    Reduce theft – Set the alarm/immobiliser and fit a physical deterrrant such as a steering wheel clamp (see the section on alarms and immobilisers).

    Obvious targets – remove mobile phones and sat-navs.

    Tempt no-one – Loose change, music tapes or CDs attract thieves and the cost of repairs may be more than the value of the items taken.

    Every time you leave the car – close the windows and lock the doors, even at petrol stations.

    Car keys are precious – remove them whenever you get out of the car and don't leave them on display at home. Thieves do break into houses to steal car keys.

    Take time –make these simple security checks whenever you leave the car.

    LOL!! Very good.

    I don't see much of a point putting in an alarm, most cars are being taken with the keys these days. No matter how much of an alarm system you put in, but there's nothing they can't do with the keys. (Unless it's fingerprinted of course:p)

    I still think an alarm is quiet a god deterrent for smash and grab thiefts. When I was in college in limerick a few years ago my old car had an alarm with a v visible flashing red led when it was activated. In the student estate a number of cars were broken into the same nite. the car directly adjacent to mine and the one opposite.I recon they left it alone becasue it would interrupt their little crime spree... just my 2c

    A 2001 astra has a good enough immobilier, as already stated, they really need the keys to get your car, if it was me I would just go for a reasonable steering lock, highly visable and should encourage the local joy riders to move along as it isn't worth the effort.....

    My car was stolen recently, it was a 10 year old mx5 jap import so no immobiliser and no alarm. Lesson learned.

    My Car is broken into and i had some crappy alarm. Gonna invest in a better one. Most likely a clifford as they bypassed the one I currently have :( original owner installed it 8 years ago from the dealers. Still I need something to page me when there is a break in
