Is it only ARW members who can carry out and qualify Parachute traing and receive their wings?

No there's a normal course ran in the DF as well. The Wing just do more specialised parachuting i.e. HALO Jumps etc.

As Dazz said, they may have been Dutch Para wings.

Manual handling course is ridiculous isn't it? They somehow justify running a week long Manual Handling Instructors Course as well! All that effort just to learn how to pick up stuff :pac:

If anyone ever asks he didn't fly through anything!!!:D

It's a 3 hour course, minimum, and if they leave stuff out there are problems!!!

Of course he done it properly:D

But he flew through it because we all had done it last year so we where grand;)

I think it was just to pass time til we got to the range.

I have however had that done 5 times in the 2 and a bit years I have been in!!!!!

When I did my manual handling course the instructor was ex-ARW don't be so surprised. Rangers are regular people who come in all shapes and sizes.

I believe Dutch (and all foregin wings) are supposed to be worn on the other side of the chest to Irish wings. As someone said you don't have to be ARW to get your Irish wings.

I know an RDF officer who jumped (jumps) with the ARW. He also jumped with the Black Knights. To be fair he is ex PDF, a paramedic and skydiver. But he's RDF now.

There is a core group of guys who are into skydiving that do allot of jumping within the Army.

Rangers are not regular people, there above regular people;)

I just find it strange that a Ranger would give us reserves a talk on how to lift boxes!:D

His wings where on his left breast pocket.

Shouldn't surprise you. Some do their time in the wing and move on to other things, simple as that. Plenty of ex guys doing cadre jobs with the RDF, working as Q's in the stores or other jobs all over the PDF. Plenty out in civvie life doing every day jobs as well.

Which, if I remember correctly, is what was supposed to happen with the wing??? To raise the skill level's throughout the Defence Forces.

Yeah its one of the orignal founding goals as far as I remember. I think originally (late 70s) it was a Ranger course that people went on like an advanced tactics course run by the orignal bunch who went to the US and completed the US Ranger course. When it became apparent that a specilist unit would be needed to deal with the increased terror threat those who were ranger qualified were a natural fit. Thats my understaning anyway!

Even today selection is considered a great course in its self even you you don't pass and go on to the skills course.
