Looking to buy a Subaru Impreza WRX STI soon and was wondering what to look out for? Is there anyway of easily telling if it's been re-mapped to irish petrol? (assuming it's a jap import)

I went to see these two yesterday:
    Subaru Impreza STI (2000)
    Subaru Impreza (1998)

Will prob take them for test drive during the week. Any current STI owners here have any suggestions/comments? Are the two cars there over priced??

    Cheers

Check out the for sale section on ISDC ..... Cars are very well looked there IMO and a good bunch for info...
The cars in the links, look to be fresh jdm imports and doubt they have been mapped to run on irish muck :p
Nice car if you can live with +/- 200 mles per tank, but then, theres that flat 4

€11,000 for an 11 year old car? That seems like madness to me, they are fast enough but for that money i can think of many, many superior cars. Certainly ones that would be more comfortable as well as fast anyway.

Come off it, you're hardly comparing a large Volvo with an STi Impreza?? :pac::pac:

The milage on the first sti look spurious considering the condition of the interior and engine.

An STI would sh!t on both the S60 and the Octavia at the same time, then tow them backwards up the road!

An Sti would not **** on an S60r. In fact i think the s60 would **** on the STi. With a simple engine remap the s60r puts out close to 400hp and with 300hp the s60r wasnt a whole lot slower than the e46 M3. And then it is a far superior car in every other way.

    hmmm

    S60R 0-60 - 5.4 sec

    00 WRX STI - 5.2 sec

if its a Type R STI its 5.0 sec

remap both, and the STI is still faster

Could the S60r lap Mondello faster than the Subaru? I doubt it, Infact I'd put money on it.

    anyhoo thats all off topic.............

those look good, but they are a bit steep price wise, there is far better value out there in Subaru's, I bought a 01 low milage 2.0 S-Turbo Forester last week for €4900, 220bhp in an SUV, its fantastically insane! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,288 ✭✭✭✭Standard Toaster

    Did you buy it private?

How much is the tax roughly on a Impreza WRX STI?

Might be looking at a 02 one this week.

OP - might be a little over your budget, but have a look at this:

Or if you're feeling a little irrational, there's this:

    I'm after an Impreza STI
Foresters are Imprezas, but without the price tag or the 'stealibility' - the manual one will do 0-60 in 5.5 seconds. STill, if it's an Impreza you want...:)

The S60r wasn't suggested. And anyway an STI is a match for one. Also, why are you talking about tuning the S60r? Are the STI's not capable of being tuned? I think not! Golf diesel drivers spout the same crap about "but a tuned this will hammer your car". You can tune anything, and if it's tuning you're into then the R33 or R34 Skyline GTR's are as good as you'll get.

There's a lad selling an 2002 one for a good price.

four new 18" wheels and tires
    fully adjustable suspension
    new cd player
    remote start
fully re-sprayed in august (he reversed into a wall ??)

bad points - needs one new brake disc, 2 ball joints and immoboliser is playing up.

immoboliser fixed this week. 10K asking price?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,815 ✭✭✭✭Anan1

You've left out pretty much all the important stuff! Mileage? Service history? Accident history? Number of owners? And finally, has it ever been washed since the respray?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,288 ✭✭✭✭Standard Toaster

    Ah, doh. :)
    Jap import with 53000 miles
Not sure about service history. Owner has the car has the car 2.5 years and says it's very good mechanically. Not much damage done hitting the wall but he wanted whole car sprayed and panel beater gave him good deal as insurance covered most of it.

When I asked about the immoboliser it was rats that ate threw some wiring....getting sorted professionally this week. He's is a lorry driver in the continent so car was only drove one day a week, two at a max. Again, this is only what I've been told. Car is running.

Aye, it could do with a wash alright :)
Car was resprayed back in August

Did u look at the isdc site?

One of the lads are selling this in the club, he is after buying a 22b.

He's looking for 12500e but will entertain offers

    index.php?action=dlattach;topic=12459.0;attach=8683;image

    1999 Impreza Ver5 V-limited
    Wrc Blue
    12500 Km
    Drivers adjustable diff
    Serviced every 4000 Km
    Tax and Nct

The engine has been rebuilt in Aug 08 due to big end failure. It has been built back to standard as it had plenty of poke and was loads of fun to drive. It was built by Ali Burrows.
It also had a new oil pump and timing belt fitted at the same time.
It is mapped to run on Maxol e5 fuel with an Ecutek map.
    It is boosting to 1.4bar.
    Also has:
    Wahlbro fuel pump
    Exeedy clutch
    Apexi RSM
    Blitz turbo gauge
    Nur Spec R s/s exhaust
    Clifford Alarm with anti hijack
    Elec windows
    Roof scoup

I am looking for 12500 euro due to the fact that it has such a fresh rebuild, but I will listen to reasonable offers

Seriously, I think that to buy that car you'd really need to know them inside out. It could well be a good one, but it could also be your introduction to a world of heartache. If I were buying an Impreza STI, i'd be looking for one that had been demonstrably babied all its life. And that, regrettably, includes neither rats eating into the wiring nor high-speed reversing into walls. Does it have to be an STI? An Impreza turbo might be a lot more likely to have had a mature owner. Just a thought.

    What about a Legacy?

Wondering did you ever find a STI to suit your budget? I have just bought the 98 STI type R you were looking at but not for 11K. If you are still looking the best advice I can give you is be very very careful. I've spent a lot of time researching my purchase and I'd advise you to do the same. If you're still in the market let me know and I'll pass on what ever info I've managed to find.

    fair play dave, which
    type R did you buy?

post some pics and if you dont mind posting what kind of price did you get off asking?

just curious as i just sold my car and will be on the hunt for something to buy with cash in my pocket, no trade in etc etc

edit, just realised that the 2 cars the OP posted were 2000 and 1998, thought they were both 98!
cars looks good, any recent pics since you bought it?

No worries. Firstly I'd like to say that I am by no means an expert. I picked up some stuff researching sti's over the last few months and from speaking to the mechanic who checked out mine. Hopefully some other folk can add to what I have to say. Bit busy today so I'll try post some pics and compile a list of some obvious things to look for tomorrow. For now the best advice I can give you is try find somebody who knows imprezas. Not an easy task I know but depending where you are there are a few around. The going rate is 100 to 200 euro to inspect a car but also depends where it is. If they can find minor things you can use that as a bargaining tool on the asking price. You're in the best possible situation with a cash sale so I'd be looking for 10% plus off the asking price. As for what I paid..... I had a trade in so it's not quite the same and I don't think it'd be fair to the lads at southside automotive to post that here. Lets just say I'm happy and I hope they are. Also check insurance before you buy. If you are under 30 I think EX Direct is the only insurer quoting at the moment. If over 30 AXA are quoting on them but it's not cheap (obviously!!)
