700 x 28 tyres for commuting?

    Hello folks,

I have a '06 Specialized Crossroads hybrid bike with 700 x 38c tyres. After the daily commute for the past few years the tyres are on the way out and I'm looking to replace them.

I was considering going for a thinner type like the gator ultraskin (http://www.cyclesuperstore.ie/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=165&idproduct=9162).

Any advice on the 38c vs 28 tyres.... will I go faster, I kill myself due to lack of grip, or be rattled to bits over every bump on the road?

Also will 28 tyres fit ok on the existing 700 rims? I assume so but just checking! :)

    Cheers
    Gandorf

    Yes you'll go faster.

No you'll be fine with the 28x700 for grip. Grip is better in better quality tyres.

And yes your arse will be feeling more of the potholes of Dublin with 28x700. But its not too bad (I've 25x700 and its fine).

As for the rest of the q's... I'm not sure!

You should be grand with those tyres - I've got 700x28c gatorskins on Mavic A719 rims which are probably the same dimensions as your hybrid rims

you won't kill yourself and you should notice a bit less rolling resistance - you won't necessarily go faster but it should be easier to maintain a speed. The ride will be a bit harder but not crazy hard.

    Thanks folks!

I'm also looking at these [http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/Continental_City_Contact_Hybrid_Reflective_Tyre_With_Tube/5360030001/] as an alternative as they have reflective strip and are slightly wider at 32c, might be less of a shock than 28s :-)

I never knew there was so much choice in tyres.....

I noticed a good bit less resistance when I switched down from 32c to 28c on my fixie - would definitely stick with 28c myself

I had the 28c version of those on my road bike and they are grand.

Anyone any recommendations for a 700 x 35 tyre with good puncture resistance. i am using 700 x 23 gatorskins myself but this is for one of the kids bikes. i am not that familiar with the wider tyres. weight/price is unimportant..

if you're not concerned about weight, then you could look at the Schwalbe Marathon XR or Plus - about as puncture resistant as you can get.
