Hi, I wonder can anyone point me in the direction of how to improve the insulation of my timber frame dormer home (10yr old). I am looking for web sites or a recommended consulting engineer etc. with experience in this area. I live in the Mid West. Thanks in advance.

Don't forget that the recently announced grant scheme for home insulation will include a grant of €200 towards the cost of a before and after BER assessment. The "before" assessment should include the recommendations you need on how to improve your house's energy efficiency.

Should have said, that unlike the actual work to improve energy performance, you can get the "before" BER assessment done without prior grant approval and still qualify for this element of the grant payment, as the SEI website says here:

    http://www.sei.ie/Grants/Pilot_Home_Energy_Saving_Scheme/HES_FAQ/Homeowner%20FAQ#when

" . . . the Before BER can be done ahead of Grant Approval and could prove beneficial for homeowners who are uncertain about their options or what to get done first."

I know you asked about insulation but have you thought of having a blower door test done. It might be a very good idea for a timber frame house if you are having problems trying to heat it.

    Hi Gears,
Thanks ofr that. Can you explain to the ignorant (me:o) what a blower door test is? I'm guessing it tests draughts and certainly while the house is reasonably easy to heat it is always harder when it is windy outside.
