    hi,
im thinking of doing an engine conversion on my porsche 944.
i found a decent enough auto 944, but the thing is my 944 is a manual.
will a straight swap work, or am i looking at a lot of mods to fit the auto to the manual box and drive shafts.
it's the 8v sohc 944 by the way.

If you're only changing then engine - why worry about the transmission ?

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

cheers for the responses. sorry i meant to clarify, that im just going to use the engine, but will the engine fit with my already existing manual transmission, or will i have to get a new flywheel or shafts so the auto engine will work with my manual gearbox.

If you currently have a manual, and you are buying an engine and auto box then you should have everything. You will need to change the flywheel over from one to the other and I would find out if they.................

.........actually I just remembered these have the gearbox at the back dont they ??

You should find out what way the drive line is balanced. Some cars have their crank and flywheel balanced as a complete unit, and the 944 will have some kind of driveplate involved.

Best to ask someone who is familiar with them.

If you were going to do a swap I would get rid of the awful auto box it saps so much power. As for an engine swap you could try to source a turbo block from a 944. A good source of info is the 924 board which is below, they have a 944 section and they guys have been a great help with my old 924.

how is your bus these days Roy?
I'm guessing you mean get a turbo block from a 924?

Sorry yes I meant a turbo block from a 924, I was getting it mixed up in my head. Unfortunately my 924 is not doing too well latetly! I was badly misfiring so I replaced plugs leads, plugs, filters and distro and now it wont start. I towed it to my mechanic mate and he says things arent looking too good.

I have my 205 for sale at the moment but I might be keeping her due to the dire situation with the 924!

Yes you are right about the 924 Turbo engine, it would be a great replacement engine, and making almost 180bhp compared to 150bhp 944's, best option but getting rare now....

sorry to hear about your own motor, if you pm me whats wrong with it I might know where to source parts

the engine overheated and cut out. wouldnt start after that, gave all symptoms of a blown head gasket.
got the head removed last week to have the new gasket fit, turns out it has a shot piston. i was advised that i was better off getting a new engine for it.
so currently looking around for another 944 to take the engine from.

right, ive found a s2 3 litre engine for a great price with loom, ecu and clutch.
it should fit, but i just want some recommendations as of what to do.
i know i will need a new transmission, so that will be on its way.

if you're swapping out the auto trans for a manual, don't forget to get the gear lever and linkage back to the trans. You'll need the manual driveshafts too (or at least one of them) as one of the auto driveshafts is shorter due to the shape of the box.

well this s2 engine is from a manual. looks like it's gonna be some serious work, have to source new rad as im thinking 2.5 sohc rad wont keep the 3 litre cool.
