NCT problem

    No problems with car this morning and 20 mile drive to test centre

    car fails on inner tie rod end, when my wife turns on the engine after test it's rattling. Her father was with her and had a row with the tester whose attitude was i didnt do anything, i've tested 100s of cars and lagunas all have problems with electrics

    brought it to our mechanic and needs a new coil pack, caused by the over excessive revving used to measure emissions


    anyone think there is any chance of NCTS acknowledging anything

    I can't see how revving would cause a sound coil pack to fail, TBH. I'd imagine that both it and the tie rod end were on their last legs - i'd just replace them and retest the car.

    I'd agree with Anan1. There is nothing the tester could of done to cause a coil pack to fail. And you could easily have been driving with play in your tie rod and not notice it, so was probably like that before the test, just the tester noticed the play with the car jacked up.

    Hard to over rev modern cars with rev limitors etc. Could be driven close to the red line all day long and should be ok. The high idle for the nct as far as i remember is only done around 3500rpm. And as was said if reving did some damage it wouldnt be a coil pack.

    not on here long and dont want to question your qualifications but my mechanic (who knows his stuff) told me that - maybe not exactly

    how long would these things last normally

    I think you need to figure out if your mechanic blamed the NCT for the coil pack failure or not.
    If he did, aside from needing a new coil pack you also need a new mechanic.

    I'm a qualified mechanic (not sure about the other two lads) and my opinion would be that overrevving could not cause this.

    As for how long it should last, there is no real way to answer that, one could last a month or 10 years. I have changed them on almost new cars with very little mileage. They can start acting up any time, could be fine one minute and missfiring the next.
