Mac mini - problems with external drive

    Hi,

I have a mac mini connected to two external drives - one which stores all my music and movies, and another which is my Time Machine backup.

I haven't used Time Machine for ages but I got a message today saying that Time Machine hadn't backed up for 419 days.

When I checked the Time Machine system prefs, it did show that the last backup was late 2007, though when I opened the Time Machine backup volume itself, there were more recent backups - certainly some from this year.

I thought it might be an idea to reboot, but when I did, the Time Machine backup volume didn't mount at all. In Disk Utility the disk shows up, but there are no volumes on it. As I think the Disk only contained a Time Machine Backup, I tried to reformat the disk, but this failed with a message saying that the operation had timed out.

The disk activity light is constantly flashing and there are some disk noises, but I can't get it to work properly.

Any thoughts? I think the disk is probably a gonner, but any suggestions for how I could fix it are appreciated.

    Cheers.

OK, now it has appeared on the desktop. I did not do anything, it just appeared. Any thoughts? Should I replace it?

Run disk warrior over it and see what it reports, could be a drive failure.

    Thanks for the replies.

    Disk Utility says it's fine.

What is Disk Warrior? I presume it does more than Disk Utility, Is it expensive?
