Ok, i'm not quite sure what i'm asking here, but i was looking at the vbulletin website and seemingly you download the software and install it on your server, what exactly does this mean... If i wanted to set one up would i need a server or could i just install it on my mac?

What does the server do, if people are accessing the website does it mean they are accessing it through your server? Would that mean the server/computer would always have to be on?

Sorry if its a stupid question, i'm a bit clueless about servers and all that...

Usually you would buy web hosting, so the web host give you FTP access to a server, anyways theres other freeware forum alternatives such as Simple Machines or PHPBB, V Bulletin's license is quite expensive

Yea, i'm trying to set up a message board wasn't sure what i needed. Those two you mentioned look perfect, would you recommend one over the other?

So all i have to do is download one of those and set it up on a web hosting site? I have a site set up on freewebs.com, would this be suitable just to try it out?

Simple Machines, you can mod & customise it to your liking, I actually set it up for a m8s site: www.clubberscream.co.uk , It has plenty of mods & addons etc, You need a host with My SQL & PHP support, so FreeWebs probably wont suit

Sweet, that looks great, exactly what i'm looking for!

Do you know any decent free hosting sites? I'm just trying to set up a free sample, don't mind paying for a better one for the real thing if it's worth it.

Your better off buying some cheap hosting, free hosts usually only allow basic HTML/Javascript and not advanced features like PHP, My SQL etc... If they do allow these features, there so limited, the forum may not even work correctly, if your a student though, try Digiweb's Student Hosting offer, They give a free .com/net domain, plus php supported hosting (With my sql database), It says its only for a year, but its still working for me and I registered as good while ago
