There are a few student ports in the engineering building where
you can simply plug it in and it will be assigned an ip address etc...

Mainly people use the wireless in the engineering building as it
is handier most of the time.

Wireless is the easiest option by far.

ok, wireless is the plan. does wireless work in most of the buildings and the engineering building in particular? when i click on the connection will i be prompted for my id and password or is there something else that happens? just making sure I am prepared guys, I am a very thourough person!!!

The wireless (Laplan 2/3) has no username/password.
You only need to configure the proxy settings
    in your browser.

There are other wireless networks available in
the Engineering building specifically but you will
not be able to access these. Only the Laplan network.

It will be all very obvious to you when you turn on your
    laptop in DCU.

On the laplan network, which is used across most of campus, setting your browser to autodetect proxy settings will work fine.

Things are different in the Computing building, could be different in the Engineering Building too.
