2004 VW Passat boot won't close

The boot on my passat decided to stop working this morning. It closes down but won't lock. I have central locking on the car.

    Any idea how to fix?

Will it lock with the key? I know on the Golf you can have the car set with the key to lock when the central locking is engaged or open where it's open all the time regardless of central locking status, my guess is it's set to open with the key.

You say it won't lock. Do you mean it just closes and can be opened by simply lifting it up? Or do you mean that it closes shut and won't lock when you lock the car via the central locking?

A common fault on Passats is the boot lock servo motor - it might be your problem.

Yup a common problem allright! If the boot won't close, the servo motor may have died in the open position and may need to be replaced. For a temporary fix you can remove the trim on the boot and unhook the servo from the lock mechanism. The boot should then close and you should also be able to open it using the key.

it just closes and can be opened by simply lifting it up.

Is this the servo motor? Is it an expensive fix? My car needs a service/NCT check next month anyway...

It does seem to be an issue.....
In my case , a spring had snapped in the lock mechanism itself.. Had to replace the unit , cant remember how much tho :o € 60 - 80 euro maybe .....

i have a similar issue in the missus scenic.it only happens when you barley push the button on the boot to open it. it's like its enoguh to pop open the cathc but it springs back. if you just push the button fully its fine again. It's one of the new fangled popper button as opposed to the older one where the button anctually pushes somehtign when you push it. It's liek your half pushign the button. It's not a fault but just a case of not pushign the button enough.

might not be the same thing as on yours mind.

I've seen boot locks before that 'think' the boot is shut when it's actually open. If you look at the lock itself, is there a little bar across it with a hole under it? If so, try putting a screwdriver (or even a biro might do) in the hole and pulling away from the lock - it should just click out, allowing the bootlid to close properly. Might not be the problem in your case, but worth a try.

Its a common failure on 2002-2003 Passats, the part is called the boot lock actuator it went in mine also . Its is a small enough part and it costs about 30 euro from the main dealer. The part consists of a motor and a spring locking mechanism and a piston. the motor coils the sping, which stores the potentail energy required to release the piston to pull the cable to release the lock catch. Thing is it piston goes back with such force it gets stuck keeping the cable taught and the locking mechanism in the open position.

It takes about 30 -40mins to replace when I did it

The bar in the lock is in the open position and stays this way. I can push the bar across but it springs back into the open position.

So the boot lid can be closed down, but its not locked and can be lifted up with your hand.

Id put money on boot actuator problem the piston has got stuck in the open position keeping the cable taught for the lock release, in turn keeping it open.

As a work around you can disconnect the cable to the piston, you should still be able to open the boot using the key. Just make sure you try it out before you close the boot.;)

Which resulted in NCT failure. However, I was about to disconnect the Boot Servo when suddenly it just "popped" when I was loosening the two "gold" bolts.

Where is the servo motor in the boot lid? Mine seems to have stuck in the open position. Is it the cable connecting the latch?

As it's 2 years on from the original post, I'd say the servo is now in the bin.
