    A grandfather today told how he was forced to spend a night in the cells after writing a protest slogan in the snow.

    Geoff Lamb, 65, said he was in custody for 20 hours after being led away in handcuffs from the outskirts of Aberdeen Airport.

    The retired oil industry worker, a member of the protest group Aberdeen Campaign Against Climate Change, wrote the message on a slope half a mile from the airport entrance for passing motorists to see.

    The 50-metre long anti-aviation message was written in diluted ink using a garden spray and said: "Plane Stupid - You Fly They Die".

    Mr Lamb, of Bieldside, Aberdeen, said he and another protester, a 25-year-old woman, were approached by police in the early afternoon and questioned, before being arrested for a breach of the peace.

    He said they were then taken to police headquarters in Aberdeen, where they were kept in cells until 11am the following morning, when they were released without charge.

    Mr Lamb described the arrest earlier this month as "scandalous", and said he had written to police seeking assurances he would be allowed to protest peacefully in future.

    He said: "This was graffiti, but it would soon be gone and we were well outside the airport.

    "It was all pretty scandalous really - I even had to pay £150 just to get my car back from the compound.

    "Nobody ever apologised, but the CID man could see it was an outrageous arrest when he came to question me that evening.

    "The procurator fiscal took a look at the notes and said there was no case to answer, and that was it."

    Mr Lamb, who has previously campaigned against Aberdeen Airport's runway extension plans, added that he would continue to protest peacefully in future.

    A Grampian Police spokesman confirmed that two people were taken into custody after they were seen "spraying an anti-aviation slogan on a snow-covered embankment", and that a report was submitted to the procurator fiscal.

    The UK really is a police state, as has been shown yet again.

    As well as defaming them, the website of the National Extremism Tactical Coordination Unit (Netcu) also carried images of people marching with banners, of peace campaigners standing outside a military base and of the Rebel Clown Army (whose members dress up as clowns to show they have peaceful intentions) and published press releases about Greenpeace and the climate camp at Kingsnorth. All this, it suggested, is domestic extremism.
