    Hi,

I have a mate from France. Would it work out if he was to buy a new car in France and keep in over there for 6 month, drive 6k miles and then bring it over here. Would I be able to buy it from him then, or would I still be liable for VRT??

    Thanks

Your friend would need proof that he's living here, and wouldn't be allowed to sell it for 12 months.

Cheers for the quick reply, he is already living here, so that proof would be no bother. If he sells in the first 12 month I would be liable for full VRT??

He also has to prove that he owned the car for six months while he was living in France before coming to live here. If he sells within 12 months of registration here then the VRT must be paid.

LHD would be a pain too. Make sure you can live with it.

    Not Your Ornery Onager

If there is a minimum usage condition for Transfer of Residence exemption, it would be 6000 km, as opposed to 6000 miles. Also, your friend would have to be moving here permanently, and be able to prove that.

Thats simply not true, he just needs to prove he's resident, not staying there. Theres a big difference.

I know someone who bought a new right hand drive Mercedes while working in Brussels for 18 months. She did not have to pay VRT. However Op what you are planning is skirting the law & most likely won't work.
