Being pushed out?

    I know somebody in an electrical company (less than 15 people) who is being given a very hard time of it by the company owner. He has been there for 8 years, he's a very important part of the company. He's a diligent and competent worker, never sick and so on. The problem is that the owner thinks that in the current climate they can get somebody in who is much cheaper so they're determined to push him out.

    They're doing this by making his life a misery there. They comment on the quality of his work (although it wasn't a problem for the first 7 years he was there and the difficulty of the work is now much easier than it used to be), they don't give him enough instructions on projects and then threaten to fire him if he makes a mistake, if he asks for a day's holiday about 6 months in advance they tell him they'll give him a "permanent holiday soon". The owner makes these sort of comments all the time, playing a lot of silly mind games. They've been telling him a 4 day week is imminent about a year now as they want to force him to look somewhere else for a job knowing he has a big mortgage, but the business is actually doing well even with the recession and he has to work overtime (which he loves doing $$$) to get through all the work.

    Any advice on who he can contact to get proper advice on his situation? Or if anybody has been in a similar situation?

    Document every incident rigidly, with dates, times, what was said etc.

    He could then approach them with his issues. If management refuse to address them then he can probably go the legal route.

    Agreed.

    A good, accurate log could go a long way should he eventually be laid off or should things become to hard to handle.
