With all this talk on the boards of commuter races and Saturday spins , what's the chances of recession races and week-day spins appearing in the next few weeks on the forum?? :) Seriously though , have to say that cycling every day this week for a couple of hours is the only thing that has kept me sane on my week off from work ( on short time ) . It really is a Godsend to have an interest like cycling to break the monotony. Are there many more of yez out there making the most of yer unfortunate circumstances like me ? ( or are ye all on the cycling forum on company time ?.. haha )

I've been on a four day week since September. I call my Monday ride the "recession spin".

The connection between economic hardship and sporting prowess has often been noted. And I must say it's a source of some consolation to me that if I do ever get made redundant from my current job, I might at least win the Tour de France shortly afterwards.

No such thing as a recession just an opportunity to turn professional for "team Scratcher" (they pay more than most continental teams :D)

Yeah - I went Pro last october. Still haven't signed with anyone yet though...

Seriously though, midweek spins are the bees knees. I'm regularly out around Enniskerry/Roundwood/Sally gap area if anyone finds themselves out that way

I was out around Howth yesterday. Very few cars when you get cycling at the right time of day. Although I did hit the Eastlink at cargo truck happy hour which was quite unnerving.

Also, left my bike in my room for about 5 hours before cycling it home, good few patches of rust popped up. Be sure to wipe your bikes in this weather, lots of salt around on the roads now.

Brighter mornings and longer evenings make for more fulfilling spins!!

I find I've been gradually increasing the length of my morning spin in - I think subconsciously it's a way of postponing participating in the recession!!

Anyway, I usually find the day goes down hill rapidly after I get off the bike!

Hi. I was out of work for 5 mths post Sep 11. I found the entire time very dispiriting to be honest. As I was living in London at the time I did not have my bike. I just went for long walks (usually to museums/art galleries). By the time I got a job, I knew every back street in London.

I dont want to be preachy, but for chrissakes keep cycling, keep active. It is absolutely essential when one is out of work to keep an active mind and body.
Cycling (or any outdoor activity is great for this). The repurcussions of being inactive and accepting your situation can be disasterous. I know, because I was there.

But cycling is even better as you can spend all day on a bike, whereas it is very difficult to spend all day playing football for example.

For folks that have been laid off recently, then feel definitely ye should post adverts for midweek spins etc. You never know, how many people are in a similar position and would like to get out for the day.

    Best of luck folks.

This r*&%*sion is like returning to my student days - no money to spend = more time spent on bike. I've about twice the mileage already this year as I would have had at this stage in the last few years.

Yeah likewise , I did my usual long spin today (after which usually I feel quite tired ) , but having put in the miles this week 'cause of my week off on short time , have to say I felt fitter . Maybe there is a up-side of sorts to this r*******n after all ! Will delude myself for comfort purposes .....

Eff the recession, i want to get rid of this cold and flu virus that I haven't been able to shake off properly since November, tried vitaminC, zinc, ginseng, guarana,echinachia.......I'm only short of hunting down some EPO if it means getting my fitness back to the improved state I had before this cold virus came along, and to make things worse, there is a tonsilitus virus doing the rounds in my house.
So you see,I have enough crap keeping me down without worrying about why suddenly my income is not worth as much anymore

I've upped my miles since Christmas - more out of necessity to save a few quid. There's loads of days I've cycled when before I probably would've taken the car. Even last week when I was riddled with a cold I still cycled.

Result - I've dropped a stone since Christmas!!! And my times have come on immensely!

I'm off during the week so I'd be up for midweek spins. I don't mind heading up to Dublin on the train either as I only have to pay from Carlow. I'm getting lonely going out on my own down here.

Can someone send me a PM over the weekend about next week? I'm off tomorrow but I've got a driving lesson in the morning, followed by driving balls on the golf course which will be followed by driving free kicks and clearances on the soccer pitch, so I won't be travelling outside Kilkenny. Unless of course someone wants to join me at 7h30 in the morning for a 50km spin in Kilkenny.

Have been out of work since Sept and there is nothing on the horizon so I started back on the bike after about a 5-6 year gap. Just doing short spins 40-50k two or three times a week during the morning down around Eniskerry.

If anybody fancys joining up just let me know.

you not heard recession's over

    Oh no!

In that case, I'm just back from a nice 45k 'green shoots of recovery' spin. :D I'd intended to do a bit more, but it was drizzling and I didn't want to get caught out in the dark with no lights.

I must say, I'm glad the weather's a bit more conducive to getting out on the roads these days. It means I can make the most of having a bit of time on my hands.

Also, it's muck-spreading season now => better disinfect those drinking bottles.

No no no the recession is not over at all. Not by a long shot, in fact it's getting a lot worse.
We'll all be cycling around aimlessly pretty soon. I've six months of cycling during the day, every day done now and my neighbours think I'm a complete waster, ha ha.
The house will be repossed soon I'd say, but sure as long as I have the bike - who cares.
