    where did you put in the proxy address?

    When setting up the access point you should go into tools-settings-connection-access points-edit the one you want-options-advanced settings

    Then you need to enter the proxy server address and the port number

    Is that what you did?

    Yeah did that. But I'm not sure of the port number. Don't need to put it in on the laptop.
    What one shold I use?

    on internet explorer click tools->internet options->connections->lan settings

    and see what the proxy is set to. if you normally don't have to enter a port number, it's probably 80 but try 8080 too

    Is there a .pac file used for the ucd proxy?

    yeah, its http://proxy.ucd.ie/proxy.pac
    That is all that has to be put in on the laptop in LAN settings in internet explorer

    right so in that file there are instructions for internet explorer etc for what proxy to use for certain services. an example would be:

    if (
    dnsDomainIs(host, ".google.com")
    ) {
    return "DIRECT;";
    }
    else {
    return "PROXY proxy.ucd.ie:8080; " +
    "DIRECT;";
    }

    the actual file will have a lot more in it than just those few lines. what you'd enter in the phone in that case is proxy.ucd.ie for the server address and 8080 for the port number. if you don't know what you're looking for, pm me the file and i'll have a look through it. if you don't have the file on our computer at the moment you'll have to wait until you connect to the ucd network again and go to the address http://proxy.ucd.ie/proxy.pac and download the file

    Thanks so much Sam Vimes.
    It is working now. it is port 8484 if anyone else needs to know it.
    Says in the first line of the .pac file
    PLEASE DO NOT HARDCODE ANY PROXY SERVER FROM THE LIST BELOW SINCE
    * THEY ARE LIKELY TO BE CHANGED!
    * IF YOU NEED TO DO SO PLEASE USE PROXY.UCD.IE PORT 8484
    So i did that and it worked
