Yeah, he deserved to win it dead or alive IMO but, he's definitely 100% going to win it because he died.

He's up against these guys for Best Actor In A Supporting Role:

    Josh Brolin ................. for Milk
Robert Downey Jr ........ for Tropic Thunder
    Philip Seymour Hoffman for Doubt
Micheal Shannon ......... for Revolution Road

It should be Heath as his performance was brilliant, dead or alive. However, PSH will probably get it.

Two different types of performance, that can't really be properly compared, but the Academy tends to go with the dramatic roles now often than not.

I thought Heaths main competition was from Josh Brolin.

Ledger is up against stiff competition. I hate movie (and music) awards personally. Its like an opinion poll in the paper, its celebrates flavour of the month more than anything.

personally i dont think Ledger, Brolin or Hoffman need an award to prove how excellent their performances were. (Tropic Thunder wasnt award worthy in any category and I havent seen Revolutionary Road)

    A. Ledger fully deserves to win, he took on an iconic character and made it entirely his own. He was the most memorable thing about the biggest film of the last year, and arguably should've already won for Brokeback.

    B. He's won more or less every single precursor award. I really wouldn't bet against him.

I thought Shannon was very good in Revolutionary Road but I don't feel that he was in an appropriate number of scenes to win it. Heath should definitely win. It's a given. I think he would have won it anyway if he was alive. One of the most memorable performances I've seen in film for a very long time.

I've always liked him as an actor and I do think he should win it for the performance but if he does win you'll find a lot of people saying it was only because he died which does him a discredit in my opinion.

I haven't seen Revolutionary Road but he should definitely get it over the other 3.

PSH is great in every movie, but Doubt is one of his worst.

Doubt is the only film in that list that I haven't seen. Any good?

    Meh.

There's no denying the script is great and the acting is second to none, but overall it's lacking. It just plods along until it ends.

looking at hte others in this catagory, i cant see any other winners, downey jr was good in tropic thunder (but not oscar worthy), Brolin was good yeah, but ledger was arguably better and unfortunatly i didnt see doubt or revolutionary road so...

It was a disgrace he didn't get it for Brokeback Mountain, one of the greatest screen performances ever.

He most assuredly does not deserve it. Getting an Oscar because you are dead is plain wrong imho.

If he wasn't good enough in BBM, he surely wasn't good enough in TDK. Paint yourself up and be mean? You could do it!

Personally I thought he was very, very good. And I haven't seen Heath Ledger in anything else so I'm not saying that because I'm a diehard fan. I'm just basing my opinion on that one movie.

Robert Downey Jr. is up for an Oscar? That does surprise me but then again I hated Tropic Thunder.

i have to admit im glad he got it.

the bloke did deserve it as it was an incredible preformance. im no diehard fan either but when i look at TDK i dont see your man from "a knights tale" or "ten things i hate about you" , he completly reinvented himself into a genuinely scary nutter. complete with little idiosycracies like the "subconsious" licking of his scars.

i kinda feel sorry for him now as this win is always going to be associated with his death and it takes away from the merit of the preformance

His was the best performance in the biggest movie of the year. Of course he was going to win something, but the fact he died cemented it.

Agreed. Stuff like this makes me mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!

    +1000

He only won because he was dead.

There were far better actors that deserved to win.

i am delighted he did win it and deserved to win it dead or alive. Although if he didnt die, i dont think he would have as the oscars are not fond of mainstream movies. I hated the idea of doubt winning anything, because it just looked like a film built for the oscars with POWERFUL ACTORS TALKING VERY LOUDLY!!!

I think Ledger's performance was the best out of all the nominees. Although I doubt the academy would have recognised this were it not for the terrible circumstances of his death (cause they suck like that).
So, for all you nay sayers out there, who would you have preferred to ahve won?

Delighted he got it TDK was a brilliant film and he was by far the best in his category, dead or alive.

Thought Tropic Thunder was shiiiiiiite TBH and was in NO way oscar worthy!

I am one of those that was ready to shoot down his performance before I went to see the movie. I was sure that it was one of those 'he died and should have already had an oscar things', so I went to the Dark Knight ready to pick holes in his performance.
I was completely blown away by it, I was expecting a poorer copycat of Jack Nicholson's version. What I seen was totally amazing, he took the role and completely changed it. He made the Joker a more evil, sinister character.

Imo he would have got it either way, his performance was just too good. Josh Brolin's performance was very good but it was not near the level of Ledger.

Exactly what I thought...for weeks beforethe release people had been hyping up his performance and I paid no attention. I went in ready to pick it apart but came completely blown away by it.
