Salary Expectations in Cover Letter?

    Hi

    Quick questions!

I am applying for a job with an online application. The application asks for basic contact details and facilitates uploading a CV. I'm guessing it's a good idea to include a cover letter with my CV?

The role itself seems to be aimed graduates who want to go on and continue with professional exams. When I graduated 7 years ago I worked in a similar role, for 5 years, and took two (out of 16) exams in question. However, I later decided I didn't want to continue with these exams.

Now I want to go back!

So, I worried that if I apply for this job, the HR people who get the application might not consider me because they might think my salary expectations would be too high. I'm guessing they are looking to employee someone on a graduate salary and not at a salary for someone who has 5 years experience. Now, I'd be happy with a graduate salary if the job made me happy, so I'm wondering (a) if I should mention my salary expectation and (b) how should I mention it?!

    Would appreciate any feedback :)
    Thanks
    J

    Hiya.

Unless they actually ask you to state salary expectations I wouldn't include them. I think it puts you in a bind if you do.

I recently applied for something online, I didn't know the salary and didn't put my expectations in the cover letter. I got a call from HR calling me to interview and the first thing they said was 'to make sure we're not wasting one another's time can we clarify salary expectations, this role is offering X' and we went from there........

best of luck with the application and with the job!

You might not want to give an actual figure in the cover letter, but in this case I would say definitely mention that you understand the role is at graduate level (or whatever it says in the ad) and that your salary expectations are in line with this. Then go on to explain why you are interested in going back to this kind of job etc etc.

Just show that you are flexible and know what you're getting into. They might still throw away your application but at least you'll have done all you can to avoid it!

Don't mention the salary in the cover letter.

Try to make it clear that you are willing to work at a graduate stage and related salary, but do subtely! Maybe write about how you want to go back to your roots because you loved the profession very much and are missing it?
