The great Ryanair has just cancelled my flight into Grenoble in may where a group of 6 of us are staying for a few days on a cycling trip. As far as i can see Lyon airport is the only other possible way of getting there. Has anyone gone this way before? Is there a bus service running between the two places? Any other suggestions anyone may have would be appreciated:(:(:(

There is a Train service from Lyon to Grenoble with SNCF 'ter' Service, about 18 euro a trip.

There are also a few coach services like this one: http://www.transisere.fr/ from Grenoble to Oisans ..

EDIT: http://www.altibus.com/ offers a direct service from Lyon to Bourg D'oisans.

Trying to keep the cost to a minimum so i'd say Paris is a no go but thanks anyway.

Geneva's not a million miles away either, could be a possibility

http://www.altibus.com/ offers a direct service from Lyon to Bourg D'oisans.
This would cost you 48 euro return, and picks you up at the Lyon Airport. their site is also available in English.

I've been on altibus, not sure if they take bikes or not. I think your best bet would be to get the TGV from Paris to Bourg D'oisans. IIRC taking a bike on the TGV is no problems.

EDIT: Actually not sure if there are any direct TGVs to the Alps during the summer. They tend to be once a week on a Saturday during the winter. In any case, it doesn't look like Altibus runs during the summer from Lyon to Bourg D'Oisans. So maybe TER to Bourg D'Oisans would be the best idea, but you would need to get the bus into Lyon first to get that train.

I'm a great fan of the TGV myself but don't think it makes so much sense if you can fly direct to Lyon and get a bus from there to Bourg. The TGV only goes as far as Grenoble in any case, you would have to make your way on from there to Bourg. AFAIK the TGV treats bikes the same way as airlines do, they have to be booked and packaged (in fact I think they are stricter, in that it _has_ to be packaged into a bike box while most airlines will take unpackaged bikes.)

At the moment Ryanair are flying to Grenoble From Kerry airport once a week on a saturday, D'ont know for how long his service will continue. It could be for the ski season only.

they wouldn't take bikes on the buses, but they will take them packed on the TGV and unpacked hanging from bike hooks on the smaller commuter trains. bureaucracy reigns supreme so a bit of "ah go on the bikes only small, the wheels come off etc won't work, bourg is about 60km outside grenoble and it is up hill alot of the way.

TGV is not worth the trouble if travelling with a bike. It costs €10 extra and must be pre-booked. Like Caroline I would advise using the TER, regular speed trains. They have plenty of bike space and charge nothing extra for using them. When buying tickets, TER is pronounced "Tay-O-Air".

The new problem that we are facing now is that some of the bus companies wont allow bikes on the buses. There are 5 of us bringing our bikes with us. Anyone have this problem in the past? Would it be possible to get a private bus company to collect us at the airport?

    Rent a Car or Van?

To be honest, you're lucky to be going into Lyon and not Grenoble. It's a horrible little airport. Grenoble airport is about 40 minutes from Grenoble, and Lyon-Saint Exupery is about 70 minutes by SNCF from Lyon (either from Perrache or Part Dieu). Get the train because France's TER trains (regional trains), being an enlightened country, have special carriage areas for bikes. Perrache is in the centre, Part Dieu is a little out, but a bus goes diretly there from the airport so easier. However, and I didn't do this myself, there's a (beautiful Calatrava-designed) train station beside Lyon-Saint Exupery airport, but I don't know if you can get to Perrache or Part Dieu from there.

Yeah, fly into Lyon. Marseilles is an option too, there are TERs from Marseilles but they do take about 4 hours.

Or you could do it like a real cyclist: fly to Nice, take the mountain railway to Digne Les Bains (3 hours, stunning journey), and then cycle the remaining 177km

    2. train to Grenoble
    3.Bus to bourg d'Oisans

your looking at about 3-5hrs depending on servicersd offered
real traveling time is about 3hrs (call it a whole day actually  )
and pray to allah that they dont go on strike (may is prime striking season season)

now whats with ryanair are they not flying to Grenoble anymore  (I always fly in there!) farkin recession!
