Peugeot Original Part Price Craziness

I can't believe what I encountered this morning when ordering a part for my 406 coupe.

I rang my local dealer and asked for a price for the part (can't be sourced elsewhere due to the nature of the part)

I was quoted €75.29 + VAT. I thought that was insane and asked him to check again as its a small part. He told that was definitely the price for the part I wanted. I told him I'd leave it.

I then went on to the owners club for the 406 coupe and asked if anyone knew how much the part should be and where I could source it.

I was given the number of a Peugeot main dealer in Enniskillen. They told me that they will deliver to the Republic no problem and are good to deal with. I rang them and was quoted a price of £18 + VAT (at a lower rate) + delivery (€5 in the post as part is light & small)

Now I'm no economist but how the hell is that price difference justified:

    Waterford: €75 + VAT = €91
    Enniskillen: £18 / 0.88 = €20 + VAT = €23 + Delivery = €28

That's a €63 price difference on a small part. There's no way I'll ever buy from Peugeot in Waterford again at this rate.

A lot of dealers are still living in the pre-online shopping days when it comes to parts prices.

The answer I'm willing to bet is a result of the gowan group, the main importers of Peugeot for Ireland. They're <snip>, for want of a better word. The place in NI would probably be managed by Peugeot UK themselves.

I'm not sure of the logic behind it to be honest but I just couldn't believe the price difference. I'm sure there are plenty of people who just get stung by Irish prices and don't realise that it can be sent down from the north.

Here we go again.Have you allowed for the difference in Exchange rates,VAT,higher wage rates, etc etc etc etc.You obviously haven't done your calculations which would show you how the difference is arrived at.

No only joking! But I am so sick of looking at reasons/excuses trying to defend our ripoff culture.Quite simply prices are generally calculated on what the suppplier think they will be able to get .Nothing to do with what it costs to manufacture it.

A very goodexample of what we are up against in this state of ours.

It might not be entirely down to the garage here.

I was looking for a coolant level sensor for my Expert. Went on to the Peugeot service box http://public.servicebox.peugeot.com/ and found it. Came out to €126 ish. Was talking about it on a French car forum. One of the lads there checked the Citroen version (I didnt have a link to that at the time) and it came to around stg£30.

This is the Citroen one btw. http://service.citroen.com/

They ar every handy as you can get part numbers for everything, down to a screwthat holds a clip. It gives exploded views of everythign. Requires registration but its an invaluable source of info, or just an interestign look if you like that sort of thing.:) (I've spent hours going through it at times).

Can You create an e-mail and multiple send it? I wonder if one was to query the price of the same part in 10 different EU Country what would be the results?

On 2nd thoughts there is probably no need to.One could make a good stab at predicting the results.I reckon that part is costing less than £5 Stg to make.

Maybe if you contact Peugeot Irl. Ltd.They may be able to give you the reason.

Or more likely they will tall you where to go.

No I didn't say any such thing!I would actually see that as a fair price if you were to look at the running costs of a business.Anything less in price would make it very difficult to maintain the business.

    I drive a 98 Lexus GS300,

Brilliant car and EVERY part I needed for the car including service kits to date (timing belts etc) I buy from USA. Guaranteed to be at least 1/2 price vs Irish Lexus dealers (Including Toyota dealers).

    Delivery is only 2-3 days

Aye prices in Irish dealers are insane. If I need parts the first thing I do is ring the dealer in question, get quote, get straight onto my contacts in the UK/Ni and find out how much I am saving!

I guess this recession has me as an allias to blame. Talk about keeping money at home!

I cant remember the last item I bought in a Irish dealers....actually it was a wheel stood! Even then I cringed at paying €4 for a bolt worth 30c!

Peugeot Ireland don't exist. See my above post! It's Gowan group who are responisble, and I've heard more complaints from both Peugeot customers and Peugeot employee's about them!

Just for clarity, it's Gowan Distributors who import Peugeot to Ireland. They are a member of the Gowan Group. The Gowan Group do a lot more than just import Peugeot.

Biro, what sort of complaints are you talking about?
