Read the label on their chicken breasts.

    Contain 85% chicken.

A lot of the meat in tesco is terrible. I would stay well clear.
Go to your local butcher . Much better!

Are you saying this is on the "tesco healthy living chicken fillets", I have never seen the label say these are 85%. They have frozen cheapo ones that are something like 85% alright, the rest is water and soya protein.

There is no certainty that everybodys local butcher will be better... I have heard many sickening stories about butchers.

In saying that I get 10 fillets for €10 in one near me, opposite the church in sallynoggin. Last batch were just over 1.4kg so about €7 per kilo. Tescos at the half price are €13 per kilo.

None of the meat offers left in Sligo this evening.

Tesco's meat is terrible. I wouldn't eat it if it was free.
    It's cheap for a reason.

I always wonder why people post on these threads to say Tesco/Dunnes whatever food is crap. I'm not interested in lots of the Bargain Alerts here but I don't feel the need to post my hatred for Mario-Halo-Theft 3. I just let it go people, let it go... :P

Well said TequilaMockingBird, I agree, it's pointless posting on a thread just to criticise the bargain.

I agree there is a lot of criticism on these type of threads, but would you prefer not knowing what the product is made of?

Most butchers in my area do 10 for €10, and have been doing it long before the recession too!

I bought Healthy Living Chicken Breasts today, about to eat one now.

They are 100% Chicken fillets, the person talking about 75% ones is talking about a different product.

It's a pretty good deal, I think sometimes people want to find a problem with stores like Tesco regardless of what the offer is, in this case I don't think there is anything sinister going on, they are just selling fairly cheap chicken:)

I browse Bargain Alerts for bargains, not for food analysis, dietary advice or cookery lessons.

I look a bit further than the price when I am looking for a bargain, that is the only way to know if what you have is a bargain or not.

    Panorama Link

Some of the chickens held 23% brine, so this is 23% of the chicken you are paying good money for that is actually water, less of a bargain.

Also, I wouldn't buy a TV that had been tampered with, you never know what else has gone in to it.

To be so ignorant of the facts after they have slapped you in the face would be criminal.

No steak left on the shelves tonight, anybody know what time is best to hit Tesco's tomorrow?

Regarding quality etc. the last 1/2 price steaks I got in Tesco recently were smashing!

    better check the date also..
my girlfriend went in to buy pork on thurs and the stuff is a day expired and still selling for full price..

Why is it still there in the first place you know...

Also a full roast (bbq) chicken used to sell for like about 4-5 quid..
noticed it today on a sticker.. indicating.. was 8.99 now 4.99..
    Absolute rip off..

The prices they show lately since before xmas gets more and more misleading by the day IMO..

that and people want to point out the fact that you local butcher maybe already selling chicken breasts cheap all year around even compared to this "special" by tesco

So if Lidl and Aldi were not retailing here the Tescos and Dunnes etc would still be ripping us off big time.

The cash back schemes we are offered in our club card is attractive but we have to spend in their store and in the case of Dunnes some vouchers can only be spent in a certain department.

So I will pass Tesco and Dunnes with all their marketing ploys and shop in Aldi and Lidl because I find their products are of good quality and Aldi veg is excellent.

I completely agree with you Macfran, Lidl and Aldi are excellent, and always have great prices. The Aldi fruit and veg offers are brilliant too. I posted to say that with this offer (ends today), Tesco are competing on price with Lidl and Aldi, I'm not saying they match them overall on prices.

I was in Tesco last night and took a look at the labels on their chicken. No mention of it being anything less than 100% chicken. In fact they had the farm they came from and everything. There were no "value" chicken products so unless that is what you were talking about.

Also the Panorama link you posted was from 6 years ago?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,813 ✭✭✭BaconZombie

Because they do not legally have to put anything on the label.

Have a look at this book "Not on the Label", but be warned you will not want to eat ANY food after reading it.....

Yes but my point was, ch750536 said in a post on the first page that the label does say it only contains 85% chicken and I could not find any proof of that.

Yes, and I have never seen fresh tesco ones saying anything other than at least 99% chicken, I think some might have had salt or dextrose or something. I also notice many of the fresh brand names say nothing, so they could well be "diluted". I did see frozen value ones only twice in my tesco, and I am there a lot. These were from thailand and were around 85% chicken as I mentioned before. At least they were clear about it too, other big name brands really try and hide the fact.
