Cost to Change VW Golf

    Hi,
I'm looking at changing my car but given the current climate I'm wondering what kind of cost I would be looking at (or trying to get the dealer to agree to).

I currently have a 2004 VW Golf MK5 Comfortline with 30K miles. (Carzone prices €9000 - €12000 for similar cars) I would like to trade up to 2006 VW Golf with similar specs and slightly lower milage.

Any one have any experience of doing such a trade and what kind of money are we talking about as the cost to change? I know that a good deal could be done for a cash sale, however with the trade in am I less likely to have haggle room on the price?

    Cheers
    JJ

I had the exact same motor as you with similar mileage and in mint condition. Went looking around to trade in over the past 2 months, and was offered about €7k from most dealers as a trade-in. Ended up selling it to a family member for a bit more and buying in the UK. Not much help to you regarding that specific trade-in but that's the sort of money you'll be offered.

Thanks very much the feedback... I can see why you decided not to trade in the end. The 7K seems very low compared to wha I paid for just over a year ago...anyway I know thats how it is.

    Cheers

Every used car has depreciated heavily in the last 12 months or so, the Golf is no different to any other make these days.

Also most garages don't want trade-ins as they are full of their own stock which they cannot sell so they offer very low trade-in allowances which is a polite way of telling you they don't want your car.

I think if you are trading like for like 04-06, you should get a reasonable enough trade in price. In essence, the dealer is getting more money in, and down to a cheaper, easier car to sell. I'd say chance a few dealers.

I have to ask the obvious question - why bother changing for something so similar at all?

Lol, that should be directed at the Irish population, not just the OP.

Why would you change a 2004 VW Golf for a 2006 VW Golf? Are they not the same thing?

Actually there is one difference, unless it was a late reg 04, the 06 will have KM clocks.. Yahh... Am...

just curious as to how much mileage you do as 30 k miles on a 5 year old car is very little. Some 06 cars i have seen would have more mileage. I travel 15K a year for work alone. Although it may make your car a bit easier to sell with the low mileage.
