    Hi

According to recent reports car dealers are willing to sell for much less than the advertised price, up to 30% allegedly...

has anyone any evidence of this??

I am close to heading north to purchase at the moment...

    Thanks

Imo 30% is unrealistic, given the current difficulties that the motor trade have would it make sense to display a price that is 30% above what the dealer will actually accept for it?

Surely the purpose of the display price is to attract a customer so advertising the car at 30% more doesn't make sense to me.

I think its a case of all reasonable offers will be looked at so you can certainly get a bargain at the moment. 30 percent may be a bit too optimistic though

It's all up for grabs at the moment, any reasonable offer will buy the car. My brother paid €18k for a car stickered at €23,950 a few months ago, last summer I paid €34,800 for a new car listing at €47k. So yes it does happen, but only in cases where the sticker price is well above the real value of the car.

Have you tried looking at what you intend buying in a garage here??
Many garages have slashed 25/30% of stock already but wont/cant accept trade ins
what are you looking to buy?? not all imports are cheaper.
Importing a car means you have no trade in. Many people want inflated trade in prices here but are happy to accept a lot less selling privately.
find what you intend buying here in a garage call in, speak to them make it clear you are buying straight/no trade in. Get a rock bottom price for vehicle before leave,if price is your sole motivation for looking north/uk bring your mechanic offer to buy as is, without warranty,do your own valet, service etc.
Seen a jaguar sold this week 3k less than import price.
    all the best

Not neccessarily. If one fella lowers his display price, so will the next and so on and so forth. In my opinion, ignore the sticker price and get into the dealer if your interested in the car.

I hear what you are saying but then it is in the best interest for the dealer to just not display a sticker price on the car then?

If I see a car I might want and see it has a ridiculous sticker price compared to other garages then I'm not even going to bother enquiring about it. It gives me the wrong vibe that this guy is simply too expensive and not worth even trying to haggle.

    Hi Carface

    I was looking at a 407 2.0 HDi (sigh....) or an S40 2.0 D

    06 S40 2.0 D up north for (22000 miles) for Stg 9k plus ~ 3k vrt
    07' 407 2.0 HDi (28,000 miles) for Stg 8K plus ~ €3k VRT

    Down here
    06 S40 44,000 miles € 18000!!!!
    07 407 14,000 miles € 17,000

Hence I thought you may be able to get a reduction on the listed price....

Well if one is trading in a car, sticker price should not matter one bit. It's completely irrelevant. Although to the same time, you could have a fella with a high sticker price and a high cost to change, which in turn, warrants him to go bank rupt lol.

You go with a trade to the fella with the low sticker price, and he gives you a low trade in, but the cost to change is effectively the same thing. From seeing your other posts, you know all this so I go into the details of it.

Alot of fella's couldn't be arsed constantly lowering there sticker price (and as of late for carzone, you have to have a price, POA is gone now), and just want people to come in and talk to the dealer.

For the likes of those two, you are more than likely best going up north. The Peugeot has dropped massively in price of late, and i don't think car dealers have quiet taken to this yet. Go to the north for the Peugeot.

A large part of the reason for the high sticker prices is the need not to have the customer feel too insulted with the trade-in value.

Yep, with a trade-in I usually ignore sticker prices as I am only interested in the cost to change price. However I bought my current car straight with no trade in and the sticker prices varied from one extreme to another.

There is a very smart way a dealer can work it and win with both trade ins and straight prices but they would need to start fresh in most cases.

The way i see it, if you can start of with low retail prices. This way if someone comes in on a straight deal, you can be very competitive with your prices.

At the same time, when some one comes in with a trade in, offer them a low retail, and low trade in, but explaining to the the concept of the "Cost to change". They'll then go out, go to other dealers that have the cars more expensive, give more of a trade in, but then see that the cost for them to move to the similar car is the same thing.

Maybe a more mature/commonsence atitude by the custumer ie. insulted by tradein offer. Irish buyers seem totally hell bent on getting a big tradein allowance regardless of condition, cost of preporation for resale etc..
Does anybody remember fiats open book policiy (set price no discount)
opel tried it but sales slumped the cost to change may have been the same but people wanted bigger paper allowance on trade in compared to trading with other brand dealers....Opel reverted to big list price with room for inflated tradein allowance after a short time sales went back to normal.
With current situation in the industry now might be a good time to try open book again across the board with all makes.
    all the best

    Hey guys,

Really sorry for dragging up an old thread!

I'm in need of a new car, have one found, its a 06 Mondeo Lx for 3,400 euro from a dealer. Don't have a link sorry cos the advert is in a paper!

What do ye reckon the best price I'd get it for?

I was thinking of offering about 2,500. Am I being unrealistic to get it for that price?

    Thanks
