Timing belt + service 03 Passat 1.8t

    What are the recomendations for getting this job done? I'm on 50,000 miles
    I'd be looking to get timing belt, tensioner, water pump, thermostat and any other belts done at the same time, as well as a service... And probably the "snub" front engine mount while in service position.

    I am based southside. (and up and down to Athlone from time to time :))

    What do you reckon on indy vs main dealer on costs and quality.

    Indy : €450 for proper timing belt job alone, add another €450 or so for service
    Dealer : as above x 2

    For passat, if its original timing belt it can run easyly 70k miles with no problems. But if some beginner is changeing it somewhere behind a dirty corner, it possibly would not run more than 50k miles. I dont think u need to change the thermostat. Any other belts as well. They can run easy 100k miles, with no worryes.

He reckoned someone working on the front of the motor dropped something down that caught the belt.
    I got the full timing kit on as it's pointless doing otherwise on those.

    A few people have mentioned Walsh Motors in Belfast.
    They seem to quote very cheap prices and I'll be bringing my own car up to them when the timing belt needs to be changed in a month or two.

    For my mitsubishi lancer I changed on 65k. It looked like new, after takeing it off. The tencioner and water pump the same. And I know hyunday sonata did changed the original belt on 100k, also there was not any crack on the belt.

    I would seriously disregard a comment like this. They quote 60k and for the safety of your engine get it done (4yrs/60k is the usual VAG period). If the belt snaps you're left with a heafty repair bill and its not uncommon for belts to snap at just over the recommended interval change (and before 70k). And just because a belt looked ok on a Lancer at 65k doesn't mean yours will.

    How much did it cost in the end OP just out of interest?

    Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't a t/b change on an earlier Passat a nightmare job? Front end has to be dismantled etc.

    If it is expect a hefty bill for labour.

    I'm doing my belt on my car next weekend. After reading up on it with my dad who is gonna help me, we reckon for my 2003 Passat, it will take us both 6 hours. That's not including a break.

    The entire front end, grill fan the lot, has to come off. The bumper looks like it needs to come off too. I'll be replacing other parts while I have half of the car on the side of the road...

    I'm not looking forward to doing it now, I almost want to pay a mechanic to do it because it's so much hassle.

    Edit: Timing belt kit for is going to cost 205.85 euro. So that's around 170 without VAT.

    Timing belt cost me €600 supplied and fitted last year on my A4 from Brady's Castleknock (Audi/VW dealer). This was cheaper than quotes from both Jetstar and the independent where I bought the car. They do the water pump as part of the job which I guess most garages will do also.

    Was curious to see how much this would cost for this car (VW 1.8T).. read various posts on line prices ranged from 650 to 1200 :eek:

    That's about 400 euro in total when you include the cost of going up there and having lunch. Plus you have to wait around for hours.

    So for an extra 200 euro I could have someone else do it for me and get a trip to belfast thrown in with a lunch and some shopping. :D That is tempting! Nice find!

    Timing belt, service, new rear pads ran me just over 800.
    They tidied one or 2 bits around the engine bay as well, which weren't done the last service with MSL VAG dealer. I like that.

    Yeah, if the timing belt breaks on your typical interference engine, bang go the valves, maybe the cams, probably the lifters, usually a couple of pistons and I would change all the bearings as a matter of course. And there is a question mark over the rods too.
    And sure if you are doing all that then you may as well change the oil pump. And don't forget to change the timing belt and tensioners / rollers as well.......

    Am after getting a quote for timing belt change, water pump etc all in for €480 and also a full service for €199 from main dealer, does that sound about right??
