Depends on the case - for sheer contribution to Irish rugby, and for still, at the age of 35, being the best option we have at tighthead, Hayes wins it.

For up and coming talent, IMO, Healy for me is the standout.

    John Hayes. 91 Caps

    hayes no competition,
he will be one of the best ever to where green.
sadly his days are numbered and ireland will suffer when he retirers in a few years. he will be 1st irish player to get the 100 caps.

Same. Right now: Hayes, no comparison.

Up and coming: Healy. Has fantastic potential and is getting better and better.

    Hayes absolutely.

Up and coming. Well I really like Wilkinson, but I think Healy pips it based on his recent display with Ireland A. Hopefully Brett will be in a position to give us a side-by-side comparison this summer.

The bull embodies the spirit of munster and irish rugby, so its no contest really. I hope i will be able to give the same praise for Healy in the future, he's such a beast, and a very effective scrummager for his age. We badly need new TH props to come forward tho, we're fecked in that respect.

Hands down John Hayes. Let's hope the man is Peter Pan, cause we're fu*ked without him.

Heaslip even commented on the Munster front row how easy it makes his life to pick from the base of the scrum and attack. He's as solid as a rock.

I would have to say the Bull Hayes, 91 caps says it all.

Hayes is truly the unsung hero of Irish rugby. something in the region of 55 odd straight starts in the six nations says it all - a record. The man is a living oddity of medical science. Playing in the position of highest collision and exposed to the greatest amount of potential injury the man JUST CANT GET INJURED wtf? Is he inhuman? Is he a robot? Is he just pumped on drugs? I can't fathom it. But Irish rugby would have been seriously depleted without him, especially two or three years ago when we just didn't have tighthead cover. We as a nation are truly indebted to this freak of nature, and long may his freakishness continue.

Here's saluting you, o valient prince*

I'd move the claw into 2nd place there! A true legend of Irish rugby.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 833 ✭✭✭pisslips

except he couldn't scrummage for the last two seasons and blatantly stamped on a guy's head in the 5N.

Apart from that though he's a legend.

Has to be the oul bull. Anyone remember nick popplewell?

    From Gorey,
    He was made of iron.

Reggie wasn't bad either or Wallace.

Yup Poppelwell and the Claw were like the odd couple, but some combination. Good buddies too I believe.

    To previous poster:

The Claw certainly stood on a head in that 5N game but only after having the eyes gauged out of him several times, don't think he would have any regrets about that one. I know I don't! :-)

The French front row feared him and that's no mean achievement.

John Hayes hands down IMHO, the guy is immense.

Reading Jake White's book and his reference to recalling Os Du Rant to his eventual World Cup winning side, Os (Ox) and John H stand together as the quiet men of top flight rugby. They epitomise everything the sport stands for.
