Half marathon - hills? training?

Hi all, I'm aiming to do the Wexford Half Marathon (touch wood and all that!). Does anyone know if the course is hilly? Simple question really but it doesn't seem to say if it is or not on the website and as it is my first half marathon I want to be prepared. Up until now I have been really just running on pretty flat surfaces and not doing much running on hills so need to know if I need to start incorporating this into my plan!

    Thanks!

Don't know about this course personally but my advice on the hills would be to be pre-emptive with it.
You come across plenty of hills along the way in all sorts of distances so why not train on them?
It's actually easier on the body to run up a hill than down one.

I guess I've been a little bit chicken and been trying to avoid them a bit!!

I'm doing this one myself Smcgui. i don't know if it's hilly or not. i'm just going to expect the worst and hope for the best.
Any idea how many people are doing it?

    Hi All,

Look foward to seeing you down in Wex. There are close on 800 entries...

In terms of hills.... Short ans: yes there are.
There is a hill on km6 - a water station is located on the top.
Thats the steepest one. It won't knock the stuffing out of you if you pace it and/or do some training on hills.

Then there are a few undulations along the course. Goes up gradually - goes down gradually.

The course will keep you occupied

Dont know if there are hill down there but there's a Half Marathon in Carlingford, Co. Louth on Saturday March 7th. details at www.stbrigids.net and there is a small incline on the route which is about 3 miles long. Why not try it instead

I think there is a max of 1000 allowed to enter!

    Web site here: http://www.wexfordhalfmarathon.com/map_description.html

Is there an elevation map available I wonder, or an idea of the total climb, so that runners could practice the kind of hills they'd get on the day.

Hi SJ, I offered to pre-run the course and produce an elevation profile, so might do that over the coming weeks, but here's what it looks like with grid-lines. Looks pretty flat, with a couple of 20-30m climbs:
