Im currently looking at a couple of older cars with no power steering. Seeing as i do alot of driving in the city centre this could be a real problem (especially when parking). A few friends have told me that fitting power steering can be fairly painless and can make drivin so much easier in (theyve only tried it in nissan micras tho). Does anyone know the difficulty of fitting PAS into something like a capri or an escort? tools, parts, experience, cost etc?

Honestly, a Capri or an Escort won't need it.

Fitting power steering to a car that had it originally (as in the Ghia Cortinas, etc) can be relatively easy. Just find a scrapper that has it and rob away. Fitting it into one that never had it (eg Mk2 Escort) can be painful, and the only option could be an electric system from a Corsa or something

    >>The-Ry-Man06 - Steering properly is probably a better solution. Never "dry" steer.

Don't mean to be rude or anything, but back in '95 I had a Capri Laser.
My sister used to 'borrow' it sometimes.
    She's 5'3" & skinnier than me, so where's the prob?

Okay, I know the whole idea is a bit ghey.

But there's a guy in Ferns, Wexford, who, I believe does this.
I have dealt with him before and he's good with all things Capri.
You can reach him on 086 2403779.

Ye i know him well, Paddys his name isnt it. Nice fella but tends to over price the cars in his place. I saw him completely do up an austin mini, frabricated the entire bonet with 4 spots out of carbon fibre! great job.

I found him handy for gettin bits n pieces over the years.

Still, what with the way things are at the moment, it's a buyers market out there. Bargains to be had right now..

Surprised you did'nt know he does power steering kits though. He mentoins it in his ads..

You get used to not having power steering very quickly. I hardly notice it anymore in my 2.0 Capri.

I'd say that's Pat Murphy Capri spares in wexford, looks very expensive for the quality of capris i see him selling. 5k sometimes for what looks a bit dodge. Mine might up for sale soon purely for lack of use at the moment :( , but not for the crazy prices he asks so hopefully it will sell :)

With a capri its steer from the rear anyway, its only a problem at parking speeds, and even then not a major deal. You will get used to it,it all part of the experience..

what sort price would you be looking for it?

3200, which i originally thought was too expensive but after picking up 4 old fords in the uk (2 of which were surprise rust buckets, but that's the risk you take), and going to numerous classic car shows and comparing condition for price, i dont think its pricey at all.

anyhow, its 2 litre so out of your insurance reach. i've the day off and took some pictures, so i think now she's officially up for sale, if there's more interest ill take her out, polish and get my good camera and take some better pics.

2 litre lazer, 87k with FSH, very good, but not excellent condition ( the only excellent condition capri ive ever seen has just come out of a full restoration, and im picky about condition. ) still on english plates tut tut

drivers wing needs a respray, but not replacement, comes with 1 litre of 2k paint used to respray car 4 years ago, hopefully still good??

will also need touching up where i had to pay a locksmith to vandalize my door to get my keys, nearly cried at the time. and will need a passenger wing painted and fitted, genuine ford one is included.

I've to pull my finger out and get these little things sorted but have other interests at the moment. I suppose this is a just a feeler for interest.

reason for sale, she's collecting dust + tooooo many cars

    for example the latest addition:

@2CV, thats poo brown incase you were wondering :P

Very nice i like the colour. im guessing its had a respray?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,214 ✭✭✭Redrocket

had a respray and a replacement wing, prep work wasnt great on the wing hence the bubbling. didnt get time to take her out and polish. been topping the fields before the 1st March comes (damn bird laws) and back back to work now for a while, no time to set her straight (wing and wingmirror)
here's what she should look like after a polish

How did you manage to do that?

absolutely love the car btw great choice of colour. You should shift that no problem with a bit of good advertising considering what some people are charging for them.

I though the ideal of a locksmith is that they could open the door without butchery!

Are the Capri locks really that good?

Nice looking car though, and if that is the level of rust well worth the asking.

the locks are probably crap, he was no lock smith he just broke into the car scratching the paint at the same time. yeah i need to pull the finger out and advertise her, got the car polisher back today so..
