Due to the publicity surrounding Jade Goodys cervical cancer...

How many people have now made an appointment for smears, and how many have followed up on previous appointments???

I've been getting regular smear tests since long before Jade Goody got cancer.

Does a free smear test mean completely free or do you still have to pay the €50 (or thereabouts) GP fee?

I ask, by the way because I'm going to have one. I NEVER even considered it before Jade's illness scared the crap out of me. I'm also looking into the vaccination. If what happened to Jade is even someway preventable by a vaccination/regular smear tests I'm doing all I can to prevent this disease.

Jade Goody is a character - but her (mis)fame and the tragedy therafter for her personal life is horrendous. I have nothing but the deepest sympathy for what she is going through.

In my experience, every single woman who has cervical cancer that i ever looked after in hospital when asked "did you have a smear" has said "no".

they may not be pleasant - but they will save lives.

Of note - vaccination prevents the commonest viral cause of cervical cancer - IT DOES NOT prevent ALL cervical cancer. This is the argument against vaccination - people will no longer attend for smears because they think they are protected.

With a GP registered with cervicalcheck the smear is completely free. You can check to see if you're GP is registered by ringing them or by checking http://www.cervicalcheck.ie/screening_locations/find_a_smeartaker.494.stsearch.html

True. It is a danger. I hope the doctor administering the vaccination highlights the need to still have regular smear tests. Is it every three years you're meant to have them?

Every 3 years until menopause, then once every 5 years.

    Thanks. :)
Would I have to make an appointment with the doctor or do you just go in and they do it there right away?
Cheers RobFowl, I checked the register you linked to and my GP is on it, hooray. :D

You should ring for an appointment and say it is to have a smear test. That way the nurse or GP doing it will have all the stuff ready and have enough time allocated for doing the smear. I get 10 mins for a regular appointment and 20mins to do a smear test. I hate getting a smear sprung on me because then everything is done in a rush and women rarely come in for a smear without asking about a few other things too. By the way the entire consult and smear is done for free if you are registered with Cervicalcheck. You shouldn't be charged for anything.
