Can't eat

    I'm not sure if this is the right thread or not..but here goes.

    The last few days,I've been finding it really hard to eat food.I go for hours without eating,to the point this morning where I actually felt weak,but when I see food I feel slightly sick thinking about eating it.Any food I have been eating,I have been forcing it down and not enjoying it at all.I don't feel depressed or anything,and I'm generally positive about my body image,but should I still be worried about eating disorders?I'm a female college student,if that bears any relevance.

    Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Well I'm personally not an expert on the topic of eating disorders, but you havn't shown any evidence of actually thinking you need to lose weight in any way? Do you think like this? because then perhaps it is related , but other wise you could just have a bit of a bug and have lost your appetite, it may sound like a simplistic solution but the same thing happened to me recently enough actually.
    If you've found yourself forcing down food that appears to me the counter image of what someone with an ED would be doing, because you're obviously concerned about the lack of nutrition your getting.
    It would probably good to check it out though just to be on the safe side, hope I'm a help.

    You need to talk to someone in real life immediately about this.
    Does your college have a GP?
    Go there and explain before you seriously hurt your health.

    It may be any number of things causing it including stress or something similar or it could be physical.
    Go to doctor!

    Deficiencies in some nutrients can cause loss of appetite, magnesium is one example.... it can turn into a vicious circle because if you're not eating, you're obviously not being nourished.

    Also, do you smoke? In some people, that can take the edge off appetite to the point of food seeming nauseating.

    Try keeping things in the house that you really like and that are easy to get down, and have small bites at regular intervals - the more you eat, the more you'll want to eat. At the moment your metabolism has probably slowed down to a crawl but gradually increasing your food intake will help to speed it back up again.

    Regular exercise will also make you more hungry.

    This happened to me when I was in 5th year in school. I still haven't a clue what it was but the deficiency of nutrients makes some sense.

    I would be sitting in school, starving thinking I really wanted to eat but when it was in front of me my throat closed up. It was physically difficult to swallow. I lost rakes of weight even though I was quite happy with my figure before that.

    It was definitely something physiological rather and psychological as nothing happened, one day I was wolfing down my mammy's dinners the next I couldn't face a bag of Maltesers.

    It just went away as suddenly as it arrived.

    I would advise going to a nutritionist to get to the bottom of it, I didn't, my Mam was always against going to the doctor unless you were dying!

    it's probably just a virus or something. Keep an eye on it, drink plenty of fluids, and if you still feel the same in a couple of days, go to the doctor.

    I’ve had something similar off and on for the past few years. I rarely experience symptoms associated with being hungry (weakness, dizziness), but do feel physically put off of food. It’s not unusual at all for me to go over 24 or 36 hours without eating...would say this happens a few times a month.

    Alternatively I have days when I can’t eat enough. They don’t seem to be related though, as in a hungry day doesn’t necessarily follow a not-hungry day.

    I’ve been to the GP and apart with being diagnosed with an ulcer (which itself puts me off eating), all tests came back as normal. I am a healthy size…maybe a little below average, get plenty of exercise, eat well when hungry, etc. I have wondered though if there are sub-conscious eating disorders or the like, as there is nothing conscious or apparently physically wrong.

    This happens to me every so often. Usually I put it down to stress. Maybe it's an indication of an eating disorder, but I think that sometimes you just don't feel like eating. That's how it is in my case, anyway. I ride it out for a couple weeks and it always takes care of itself.

    I would agree that a visit to the doctor is called for - this isn't normal behaviour, the human body needs replenishing every 4 - 5 hours or so.

    I really believe you need to see your doctor - this is not something that you should ignore.

    Are you stressed about anything? I know exactly how your feeling, last year I had a few bouts of this (seems that it happens when i was excessivly stressed), one in particular lasted over a week, it was horrible. The thought of even eating made me wretch, brushing my teeth was a completly nightmare. I was soooo hungry.

    If I managed to eat (a biscuit or soemthing) it would come straight back up, It was really really horrible. I put it down to stress. On maybe the 6th day or something, i went to the doctor and she wasnt very helpful at all, said it was stressed related and there was nothing that could be done. But then things got better and i was ok 2 days later.

    It happened again, but not as extreme thank god..I did end up with a stomach ulcer tho (not sure if it was related)

    Could you take pharmaton or soemthign similar..the difficiency sounds plausable too, Id deffo go to the doc tho..and insist on an answer. Its really not nice!

    Happens to me occasionally, and normally I eat all around me. I love food.

    Wouldn't think it's anything either unusual or to be worried about.
    Unless you're already underweight or it goes on for longer then a month go with it. It's probably just some form of internal mechanism of your body.

    I think our bodies have something that means its healthy for us to fast every so often, and that that's one of the reasons that periods of food restriction crop up in major world religions e.g. lent and ramadan.
