Would love to FLOYDSTER, but don't have the paperwork I'm afraid. Have to get matches under my belt for the Isle of Man as well, so going to be down in DRC on sunday I think.

That paperwork for NI is a real PITA for ROI shooters :(
Mind you, it's an equal PITA for NI shooters coming here!
If ever there was a "someone ought to do something about that" problem...

We'll need to have a chat!!, the sponsor does all the writing by the looks of things!!

    I've got Leslie's here!;)

I had the forms filled out in so far as I could to give you at the last match before it got cancelled, but I'm sure I can give you it at the next one as well if that suits?

I'm more thinking of a systemic solution though Floydster - having to sort out all this paperwork seems to hold back a lot of people who'd go if it was just a matter of getting in the car and running up the M1.

Is it 2010 the deadline is for the EFP being the sole document needed to travel throughout the EU with firearms? Roll on whenever that is!

    Sure, in theory :D
Problem is, they watered down the EU directive from saying the EFP will be the only document needed to saying it will "usually" be the only document needed. But it will gain a lot more weight.
I'm more wondering though, whether a quiet chat between the DoJ here and their counterparts above might see them make things a little easier for target shooters going to matches up north somehow.

Well, that's something to focus on for the immediate term.

Was planning on a trip up mainly to try get a sponsor but a last minute work conflict got in the way, definately agree that if the paperwork was a little easier to obtain there would be more lads heading up...

Sorry Floydster I should have been a little clearer, I meant if you didn't know anyone from up North it would make things a little harder.

Just to explain Floydster and to add my apologies, but we've a competition tomorrow that I have to be there for (and set up today :().

Most of the University lads shoot on authorisations, so they don't have FAC's and can't travel.

Is there a way of getting a visitors permit for a longer period than for one competition? Sometimes, the whole process can take up to six weeks (I'm told), so you have to be reeeeaal organised to be able to travel, an annual permit would help there.

We need to get this going again, I used to have a NI FAC and always enjoyed the matches in Comber, so anything that would help get that started again would be great.

Guys, the visitors permit for those with an Irish FAC last for a year!;)

I not sure how those on authorisations would stand??, but if they are on an Irish FAC then its bound to be able to be done!!:D

I had thought they lasted a year alright. I have a residence in the North, up near Newry, so I may try get a full NI FAC to allow me to purchase ammo and such up there, and as it lasts longer IIRC. Hopefully FAC's would be available on authorisation, as I'm sure there are some DURC members who'd be interested in travelling up, but very few of us actually have our own FAC's.

I don't think so. An authorisation is for a club member to use a club firearm in a designated Garda district. Even to use it in a different district requires a removal order from one district to another and another removal order to bring it back.

The authorisation is issued to the club and doesn't name the members (usually), but they can differ from district to disctrict because the firearms act allows Superintendents to attach any conditions to them.

It sounds as if it wouldnt be easy then for those who havent their own FAC!,
although are the club guns registered to a person or just the club??

They aren't licensed to anyone in particular. The club has an authorisation from the Gardai to run the club & range and the rifles are included in that authorisation. It's a slightly weird system. A few of us have FACs for club guns mostly to allow us to travel abroad since other police forces tend to find the authorisation system too strange to deal with.

I travelled to Comber twice while I was in college and didn't have an FAC. The PSNI did issue a visitors permit for the firearms we brought and we got a removal order to cover us as far as the border so it is possible to do in theory. I don't know how easy it is to do in practice since someone else kindly handled the paperwork for me the last time.

The only problem that I can see is that the Comber Open is usually on the August Bank Holiday weekend when very few people in the Republic have a valid FAC since all our FACs expire on 31/7 and the renewals take some time to arrive. Would the PSNI issue a visitors permit even for a cert that was going to expire before we arrived?

Yeah, the DURC system doesn't seem to have an analogue in other states so they look at us funny when we talk about it. I know it completely confused the PSNI girl I talked to about it when it was my turn to set things up for a trip to Comber before. Oddly, though we don't have firearms certs for the rifles, we do get europasses, usually for the chief range officer or whomever the senior club person going to the match is, with all the rifles on them. But that didn't have much weight with the PSNI back then, if I remember right.
