Hello all, It's been a while since I cycled and i've not really any idea what size bike i'm looking for.. I'm 6'6 and a rather large frame but that bit i can handle... I'm assuming a 20' frame is too small but not sure if i can get any bigger...
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

...myth. road bikes are sturdy too. just a good wheelset will serve you well. read recently that Koga bicycles manufacture many frame sizes, so there is one for you. have you a budget in mind?

on a side note, cant wait till my giant frame is finished, i'm gonna get one of these...

How far away from "the north" do you live? Nothing personal, but I find it funny how people set a budget of 400 euro and then spend about 40 euro driving to the north to have a look

Check out your LBS if you want to get sized up, you don't have to buy from them if you don't want to.

It's a bit odd that you're already admitting defeat before you've even purchased the bike.

Anyway, if you're 6'6" and heavy you may have problems. In road bike sizing you'd need about a 62cm frame (guessing) which is not available in many bikes. If you buy a frame too small you'll have a larger drop to the bars which might cause you problems if you're just getting in to cycling and/or have flexibility issues. You may also wear out components faster (e.g. wheel hubs) and normal wheels may go out of true (you can get "clydesdale" type wheels for heavier riders), so buying cheap may be a false economy.

On the plus side, I wouldn't worry too much about the weight of the bike.

If you're going up north, maybe pop in to McConvey Cycles for some advice, they get good feedback on here.

Have you considered a hybrid, they're a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike. they'er easier to ride than a mountain bike and stronger and more comfy than a road bike, it's a good alround bike and can easily handle distances of 40-50k (2-3hr ride) or a trip to the shop. I was in the same frame of mind as you when i first started and bought a hybrid then i found i really liked it and ended up buying racing wheels for an extra 300e.
    I'm kicking myself i didn't buy a road bike.
