Career advice needed - want to travel

After doing my MSc. in Computing, I started a software development job in late 2006. Initially the plan was to cut my teeth, get a couple of years commercial experience and then go travelling for a year or two.

The economic landscape has changes somewhat since then. In many ways I feel lucky to have a job, but working for a US multinational means that the job security is questionable.

The problem is that in 2010 I will hit 30, which means I can't do a year in Oz. I may still be in my job at that time, and I'm afraid that if I leave it I will have difficulty getting another job when I return.

Should I just bite the bullet, quit, and go travelling? Or should I stay in my job?

I don't have a mortgage or any investments.

Save like a crazy monkey for a few more months, and then head to Oz.

You can still apply for the visa when you are 30. Once you apply for it the day before your 31st birthday and no more than 12 months before you intend to travel to Australia.

In essence you can apply a few days before you turn 31 and your visa will remain valid to activate for 12 months and upon activation will run for 12 months. So you can do your 12 months from just before you turn 32 to just before you turn 33 if you like.

same boat, I hit 30 next year, just starting back my job next month after travelling for a year but want to go to aus before its too late... my advice would be to get all the experience you need in your job, save as much as you can and book your flightv;)

Stay in the job. Forget this travelling business.

You already fannyied about long enough doing your masters!!:D only joking.

Haha... [@Murph].. well my MSc. was kind of commercial experience as I was developing software for a company and had to work to deadlines, etc., but I took it handy after my degree, I'll give you that!

    Well thanks for the advice!

Ok, so the general consensus is to just stay where I am and save. Then in a couple of years I can get up and head to Oz. Sounds fine to me. I didn't realise that I could apply after the 30 mark :)

When I eventually go, I intend to travel for maybe two years. Still not sure how long I will go for, but I would like to see india also.

In terms of savings, I'm close to the 10k mark already (it's going into an account where I can't touch it) so in a couple of years I should have enough to be able to just travel, and won't need to work for a while.

On coming back, I'm hoping things will be looking better in Ireland for jobs. But who knows, maybe I won't want to come back?
