I dont think we have one of these here, if we do, then i apologise.

Basically, there always seems to be people posting asking "is this a good price for a service" or "where can i get my car serviced cheap" etc etc.

So, if you get your car serviced, just post what was done, where, and how much. That way, anyone who comes on looking for advice can see how other people got on. Maybe it wont work, but its a slow moring in work so its keepin me occupied...:D

I got mine done yesterday, in Cyberhood Autos in Parkwest. Done the plugs, filters and an oil change for €120. Happy days!

Not a bad price BD. I am involved heavily with a garage equipment business start-up recently and the amount of new lifts, compressors, tyre changers and that type of equipment we are selling has surpassed all expectations. We are finding that a lot of lads who have been let go from garages/dealerships and going out on their own. There seems to be a mini-explosion of sorts in small start-up activity in the indy end of the motor industry.

I imagine this will drive down the cost of servicing and maintanence...

Can only be a good thing then eh? There's always someone looking for work to be done. A mate of mine had his 05 Citroen C4 die on him the other day, she was leaking oil from somewhere, and when i dipped it, it was bone dry! Gonna be a big bill, and for some reason, my first reaction was to point him towards an indy.

You could have saved yourself at least 50% of that €120 if you had an hr to spare and plus you get to have a good look about to spot any potential faults its also a good way to spend an hr...!

btw, Use only high quality parts and oils/fluids.

But i like the fact the someone qualified has worked on my car, not someone with a set of spanners from Halfords and a Haines manual. Besides, I didnt have the hour to spare.......;)

My Forester is due its first service soon - the intervals are very short, every 15,000kms. I called Carroll & Roche, who wanted €400 + €40 for a replacement car. Castle Subaru in Bray, where I bought the car, quoted me €250 including a replacement car. I think both quotes are on the high side for what's essentially an oil & filter change and a few checks, but that's a fairly big difference for exactly the same work.

The wife's S-Max just cost €220 for its first service at the main dealer for just the basics, but they did know about and sort out a recall, too, which an indie might have missed.

Fair enough i guess, if you buy your tools at Halfords or need a Haynes to change plugs and filters your better of paying upto 50% extra.

The last car I got serviced in a main dealer was a Ford Focus in Finlay's of Newbridge about a year ago. 97 quid for an oil and oil filter change which I thought was pretty reasonable for a main dealer.

A lot of main dealers have standard service prices up on the wall in reception. If the prices aren't up on the wall I'll always get a verbal quote beforehand. In any case, if the car needs work over and above the standard service (even something relatively small like a set of wipers) the garage must ring me for authorisation before going ahead with the work.

The above is really basic stuff and it seems to me that both garages and customers benefit from things being done transparently. It's surprising how many people leave the car into a dealer with no clue what needs to be done or what sort of bill to expect, they don't ask and the garage doesn't volunteer the information. Then a few hours later the customer collects the car and is shocked to be hit with a bill of over a grand for a major service + timing belt + brakes + tyres + wipers

Any idea how much this would cost (labour+parts) VW Passat

    Timing Belt
    Oil Changed
    Fuel Filter/Air Filter
Brake Fluid..might need to be done
    Engine Mounts need replacing

    Any rough ball park figures?

How long would this all take? 4 hours?

    Thanks

Did my service last Sunday. €48 euro all in. New plugs, oil, oil filter, air filter and a bottle of that stuff that supposedly cleans the injectors. All the high quality stuff too. Ngk plugs and so on.

Id be afraid of messing it up. The oil change looks straight forward as does the air filter.

1.I dont know anything about oil filters though - does it have to be car specific?

2.Brake fluid - I heard this is one of the harder things to service?

3.My milage is 76km will it need a timing belt change?

I assume thats the full service.
