just had a look and I'm curious, alot of 04 car listed as repossesed, usually banks won't finance cars for more than five years, so why so many "old" cars listed as repossesed?

Stuff obviously isn't selling so if they have to resort to these tactics, in fact you don't always get what you thought you paid for with Merlin, anyone thinking they're getting a bargain be very careful, all is not what it appears to be.

can you explain your quote? what experience or knowledge do you have of dealing with merlin?

i also heard that a lot of their motors are rough.

    So anyone got tonights results?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,035 ✭✭✭✭-Chris-

A lot of any motors at auction are rough. They wouldn't be in an auction if they weren't difficult to sell for some reason (or if you didn't need immediate liquidation).

Whether it's a 5 year old car with suspiciously low mileage and a shiny steering wheel, or a €100K BMW that's 6 months old, if it's hard to sell it'll be at auction. If it's not hard to sell, it'd be on a forecourt somewhere.

Only 25 years or so in the motor trade and been to Merlin maybe three or four hundred times and sold more cars there that bought, wouldn't be green when it comes to cars. Just a word of warning, anything that seems to good to be true usually is.

Well Chris, I'm just back from an Auction in the UK with over 300 motors and I can't disagree with you more. Most motors were less then 3 years old and mileage under 50k miles with full dealer history and warrented too. Prices were frightening low compared to Merlin (or Irish dealers)

well these days with such a slow market, legitimate cars still need to be sold quick i'd say.. redundancies causin people to get rid of nice cars and repossesions from banks goin to auction?

Fleet companies (and fleets in general, and banks who have a stock of repossessed cars) don't want to get involved in retail sales of their cars - they just want rid of them a decent price in the least painful manner possible. Some will be sold to the trade, some will be sold at auction.
    Immediate liquidation.

You'll find some minters at auction, there's no doubt. You'll also find some dogs. You just need to have your wits about you.

I was at last Saturdays auction. First time in about 2 years or more. I was amazed that every single '08 car they had was a 'FINANCE REPOSSESSION' by financial institutions. They should be fine you would imagine, reliability wise. After all they're not even a year old.

They also had a repossessed '07 Austin Martin, but I didn't see if there were any bids

i was there last saturday first time but my hubby has been going for weeks, i dont miss a trick, there was men in the crowd bidding on certain cars just to drive up the prices, most cars were sold we waited round cos hubby was buyin a jeep, but very few people paid.. in reality very little cars were sold, and no real bargains as far as i could see. one particular man bidding was wearing a merlin jacket.. some cars have been gettin 'sold' for weeks apparently, and i dont mean provisionally sold.. as i know the difference..

If you can't manage to spell 'meant' you probably aren't best placed to weight the pros and cons of Lisbon..

Nice attitude there, so if you stopped paying for your car, and the finance company that still owned it wanted it back, you'd thrash it first!

Classy, you sound like a nice person.

As AudiChris says, there will be dogs, and there will be great cars out there. Pick and choose what you want.

And for those of you complaining about the poor selection - if you dont like it, then dont go!

guess what you'd still owe em the money that was left as far as i know themoney paid for the car pays for the repo whats left goes to the finance company anything left you still have to pay. think its the same with mortgages

open to correction only had one car repo'd but it was a company car and i wasnt a director so not my problem (except having to get a 12 year old car back on the road that was parked in my drive)

Too many ordinary punters in the Auctions these days anyway , driving the price of sh**e through the roof. The general publics opinion that the motortrade is on its knees and all the bargains are in the Auctions is really helping Merlins profits jump through the roof.

Merlin aren't selling as much stuff as they'd like you to think they are, a lot of it is hype, they give the impression it's selling and you see the stuff there weeks later still for sale as some others have mentioned.

Anybody going to the Merlin Auctions these days .. I'm in the market for some kind of small Commercial Jeep

Nissan X-trail, LR Freelander that kind of thing... I'm just wondering how the prices are ?

I see a few 07's currently listed on the Catalogue.

Used to go to Merlin fairly regular and the people who spoke earlier were probably talking about provisional sales .. (A sale that did not meet the owners reserve price) they will often not be sold and will be there again the next day.

You need to have your head well screwed on at auctions .. or you end up paying too much for complete tat. Its the Auctioneers job to stir up excitement and probably there are a few 'phantom' bidders (Auction employees or friends of the seller) at a lot of Auctions, who will bid on things to get them upto the reserve.
