Michael Vick To Be Traded

Well no surprise there by the Falcons especially with the season young QB Matt Ryan has had.
Vick is due to be released from prison in July but is suspended indefinitely by the league, I don't think this will be a problem once he has served his time in prison.
There is no doubting the exceptional talent that is Vicks and if teams can look beyond his criminal record, he would be a great trade, he can not only throw the ball but can really stack up the rushing yards, not QB can do both and its a hard thing to deal with.
The 49ers coach Singletary has not ruled out a move for Vicks when asked about it because of the problems they have in the QB.

I personally would love to see him come here to the bay area, he is a fantastic talent and could really re-energize the franchise. Would be good to see a QB with a bite to his game (thats my dog joke, not great was it !)

I think what he did was horrible but whats done is done and in the past, he was punished for it.

I would probably send an e-mail of complaint or something. Do not like him. Prison sentences should mean automatic expulsion from the league, much in the same way that you would not be aggressively recruited by Microsoft if you'd been arrested for torturing dogs and drowning them when they weren't good enough to win fights to the death.

Don't think he'd help the 9ers much either, they have a great running back and Vick isn't much of a passer... plus he's older now and out of the game several years so he won't be the same as a scrambler.

He won't be traded for, he might be picked up as insurance as a free agent when his Falcons contract is finished, but who's going to pay what he's worth on his current contract? They'd be stupid to, and potentially they could even lose revenue from the bad publicity on top of that.

It's hard to say whether I like him or not because I don't know him but I obviously don't like some of the choices he has made in his life. What he did was disgraceful but he was sent to prison, what more can he do......
People deserve a second chance and it would be a good thing if he could set an example.
The Microsoft analogy is a bit daft to be honest, I am sure if someone was able to make them enough money they would come knocking !!! There are probably people in positions that have a lot more influence on us that have done worse !!

I think the SF would benefit a great deal from him, they rely too much on Gore as it is, Vick is one of a kind and was one of the best players in the NFL when playing so I think a lot of teams would be interested.
I am not too sure how old he is but I think he is 28, that is not old at all, he still has a lot to offer.

He may well not be picked up and teams may avoid him over bad publicity but if he started to produce results then fans would not be long forgiving in my opinion!

Would be disgusted if SF made a move for Vick. If anyone is to pick him up I hope that it's some franchise I hate... Cowboys anyone? ;)

If he's done his time, I see no reason why he couldn't play again. 2nd chances and all that

He'd help any team thinking about using the wild card formation

    !

He was an awful QB. No team will trade for him and his $44m+ contract. He'll either have to restructure it then be traded or just be cut. He's throwing was bad enouhg before he went to prision I hate to imagine how bad it's gotten since he hasnt practiced in years.

I doubt if any other team would actually trade for Vick, for AFAIK would that not mean them having to take on his very very expensive contract and if that is the case, then no club is going to do that for a player that has been out of the game for so long, as nobody knows how his skills may have deteriorated or whether he is still capable of being the same player he once was.

Its more likely that some team will take a chance paying him the veteran minimum rate perhaps with some incentives. However, Vick was always a far better runner than a QB, his passing, in particular, won't have been helped by his time out, while nobody knows what sort of physical shape he will be in. Vick also wouldn't seem to have much to offer as an experienced QB to mentor a young QB, for who wants their new stud QB to be mentored by a guy thats just come out of prison ?

Yea, hopefully this is one reclaimation project that Al can resist. The Raiders have lots of needs but a big name former QB just out of jail, isn't one of them.
If Al has to take a chance on another new QB, then taking a QB in the later stages of the draft is the way to go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,142 ✭✭✭Karlusss

Well we all know Jamarcus is a great player. Al told us in his letter to Lane Kiffin. Put a lot of stress on the GREAT as well. So no new QB in Oakland.

Vick will obviously not be taken as a starter, and to be honest he doesn't seem like an insurance-for-a-young QB type guy either. If he ends up anywhere it'd be backing up a secure QB, I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,028 ✭✭✭Carcharodon

    He was an awful QB.

That is incorrect to say the least !!!!
Does his numerous rushing yard records count for anything, or how about being selected to the pro bowl on numerous occasions or how about he was an extremely good player......

Obviously his physical condition would have to be evaluated and the financial side of things would also have to be looked into in great detail but he could be devastating in the right system.

Cowboys would have no problem in taking him I say, look at the lunatics they have already !

Theres only one team in the NFL that would take him and thats the Cowboys, they love the troublesome types for some reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,260 ✭✭✭jdivision

A lot of teams will be interested in Vick but not I venture as a pure QB, he isn't accurate enough. Teams might use him as a wildcat type QB on occasional plays but mainly I'd expect him to be used as a Reggie Bush type RB

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,067 ✭✭✭tallaghtoutlaws

Age old argument of whether Vick was any good. If you are looking for a small fast QB who can't throw to save his life pick Vick. If you want a decent passing game dont pick Vick simple as. The only thing he offers is rushing ability. He is not a leader on the field and no WR in the NFL will want to be his target. Look how much better the Falcons WR's have done since Vick was sent to prison.

My taking on his jail term. Yes he derserves a second chance anyone who comes out of jail does well once they havent murdered or raped deserves a second chance. But not a multi million dollar second chance fook that. What sort of message do you send the kids? Especially those who grow up on the wrong side of town per say. Dont worry kids be a criminal but once you can play ball the NFL will always give you game time. Colleges in the US are going to bring in harder sentences and expulsions now for football players who break the law. Any serious crime and you can kiss your scholarship good bye.

NFL has become a joke. Role models my ass.

Just my opinion but i dont think that Nfl players or any sports stars should be held up as any kind of role models. They are professional athletes and that shouldnt mean to live to a higher moral code than the rest of us.

dont hink he will be taken by anyone as his joinig a team would attract so much bad attention

Then don't accept million dollar advertisements

Loats of players out there that are still decent blokes though. How many players involved in incidents each year? 10/20? Out of well over 1,500

I think tallaghtoutlaws is being a touch overdramatic

adults buy jerseys, for themselves and their kids, adults buy tickets and adults buy the tv stations that the matches are on.
Thats where the dollars come from.

All types of pro athletes imo dont need to be role models.Thats not wjat they are paid to do

They shouldn't be held up but the sad fact they are. Millions of kids around the US and the world look up to these guys as they are professional and in the media limelight. They aspire to be these guys. Like any professional ahtlete they will be classed as role models. What do you mean they shouldnt live up to a higher morale code? No one is asking them to do that but in fairness Vick broke all moral codes to begin with by going to jail and any player who breaks the law is already breaking standard morals. Simple fact the NFL as a professional outfit should offload this guy. As i said im all about second chances but when the second chance puts you in a media spotlight and earns you millions im sorry that is just ridiculous.

And Dodge there is nothing over dramatic about any of this. You break the law here and go to jail do you honestly think your job will keep the door open for you?

How is that the same he wasnt caught with a Dog Fighting Ring in his back yard. He didnt spend time in prison for it either. Admitting to liking it and actually holding events in your backyard are two different things now in fairness

Yeah, you could say Michael Vick served his time whereas Jones didn't. He's not a role model because of dogfighting, he was a role model because of his football ability, and if it's still there and a team are prepared to take a chance on him he'd be a hero again because of his ability, no other reason.

The guy served his time, it shouldn't mean he should be held up to accountability for past mistakes the rest of his life.

Dunno how effective he'll be though upon his return, that long away from throwing a football, reading defences, staying conditioned etc. If he returned, as someone said earlier I'd expect him to be a screen running back or wideout.

If I was the only person who could do the job at that level, I'd get another one fairly sharpish.

And that wasn't the point, you talked about the NFL as a whole whereas I pointed out that 20-30 of the 1,500 players are involved. If its even that high...

And I didn't say anything about the whole NFL i.e implying everyone was at it. I was say the organisation which is called the NFL is a joke. Whether you allow 1 person 20 people 30 or even a million people the number is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is whether these players chose to or not they are seeing as role models. By not enforcing proper disicpline they are basically saying its ok to be a criminal by allowing Vick back in simple as. And your example of If you were the only person makes no sense to this point either as Vick is hardly the only person nor is any NFL player and you will find it very rare there is any jobs out there were there isnt someone who could replace you. :D

There's a reason Goodell is clamping down on players like Vick and Jones, it's bad for the nfl image and that in turn makes it harder for them to get $$$ from endorsements.

2006 He started all 16 games, they went 7-9 No Playoffs
    2005 He started 15 games.they went 8-8 No Playoffs
2004, He started 15 games, they went 11-5 Lost in NFC Championship Game 27-10

2002 He started 15 games they went 9-6-1 Lost 20-6 In The Division Round
2001 He started 2 games they went 7-9 No Playoffs

It's also worth noting that both times the Falcons made the Playoffs he lost to Philly twice

Hardly the sign of a stellar QB:(

Fair enough, stats don't hide the end result but you can't just judge a player on those alone. He did bring them to the playoffs !
I am not saying he is Dan Marino or Tom Brady, he obviously has issues with throwing the ball, it is not his strong point but he is a running QB, that may not be the norm in the NFL these days but he can be effective.

There are other places on the field where he can be used and he can be used very effectively in the right system.
Yes, he has been out of the game but it could be worth a shot if the right deal could be made.

That sentence in bold answers your own question. Unfortunately a QB at top level needs to be able to throw. Vick is an average thrower at best. Now if he could throw and stand in the pocket confindently then yes he would have been a better QB. But unfortunately there is no real room for an all out scrambling QB. QB's with quick feet have alot to offer especially in broken plays or plays where there is just no target to throw to and room to run. Vick would be a better WR or RB but even then he is too small. Any team that wastes the money on him is mad. Falcons are brave looking to trade Vick as no one will pay that kind of contract to him.

Yes, all valid points by you and others but I am still of the opinion that he could have something to offer in some form. We can all have our expert opinions on how good he was but in the end it is only an opinion.
I don't think it's an easy thing to make it as QB in NFL and hope there is still some life left in the old dog ! :pac:

Is it alone? Look at the MLB's treatment of dopers, or closer to home, look at the English League: Joey Barton, Lee Bowyer, Steven Gerrard ... guys who beat up the people they're supposed to be selling tickets/jerseys to. And what ban do they get? So I wouldn't be too quick to hop all over the NFL on this one because team sports in general get off scot free compared to individual sports.

Having said that, I agree with you - Vick shouldn't be let play IMO*, but it seems to be a way of life I'm afraid. And the NFL aren't one of the worst compared to other sports.

*Without some serious groundrules at the very least

I'd love to see him in Oakland he has served his time there is no need for Commissioner Goodell to punish him any further. He would be great for the silver and black considering JaMarcus Russell is a bust.

What and you think Vick will do a better job at that shambles of a team? Russell is not at fault for his poor performances. when are Raiders fans going to realise you need to fix every part of your offense before any QB can do his job properly. Give the QB some decent protection and some decent WR and he will do alright. But the Raiders are far more concerned offering large contracts to rubbish players and guys who will do fook all to strengthen the Silver and Black. Vick will fail at the Raiders just like every other player who went there.

Russell is way too young to be called a bust, he's younger than Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco, he's just over a year older than Mark Sanchez, who's coming out as a junior. Russell will begin to be judged in second half of next year with a more accurate assessment to be made based on his performance the season after that. He also could do with a couple of targets and a line worthy of the name.

You are smoking weed. Tom Brady and Peyton manning would struggle with that showdy protection and sh1t team that is the Raiders. Raiders fans who say Russell is sh1t honestly are clueless and need to wake up to the bigger picture. Your organisation is a shambles and no QB could have done anything decent in there. Russell dont forget just played his full first season with no protection up front. You cant judge any QB too harshly in that system.
