The swedes have Volvo, the germans have BMW, the italians have Fiat and so on, so would'nt it be great if there was an irish car manufacturer that we could support (or slag off:D).

    What name could it have??

Where would the factory be based??

    And what would Clarkson say??

    any ideas??.....

Production of up to 10,000 cars a year was talked about but eventually, only ten complete cars were produced during the six months before production ceased. After the factory closed, the unused parts were dumped into the local Lough Muckno.

Now THAT's Ireland for ya :D

    and Fords in Cork

By Ballyer do you mean Ballsbridge? They assembled them on the site of what is now Ballsbridge Motors from 1950 to 1955. Then on the Nass Road from 1955 to 1980.

I had an Irish one, it was a '76. You know it was assembled here if all of the glass has the Triplex Tipperary stamp. Unless all of the glass has been replaced at one stage.

Edit: I also had an irish '68. I'm forgetting about past cars and I'm not even 23 years old yet myself!!!

who was since bought out by the americans, who pulled the plug on it last week...due to close very shortly, only a skeleton crew left..

OP could be right it's about time we brought back Irish manufacturing..

    We'll call it the.... icar

we'll build it on the site of the old triplex factory.....

and we'll call the first model the.... 2000

meant Ballyfermot for the Naas Road

Oh, my south west-ish Dublin geography isn't the best. On the deep dark northside we'd usually refer to Ballymun as Ballyer.

The Crosslé Car Company manufactures vehicles in Hollywood Co. Down. There was also two industrialist brothers in Northern Ireland who formed their own car company around the turn of the 20th Century roughly 100 years ago who were also involved heavily in the Northern Flax and linen trade.

Well there was the TMC Costin during the mid-late '80s. It was kind of a Caterham competitor:

Stephen Roche had one, a few other Irish 'celebs' as well I think...

39 cars were built before TMC went bankrupt in 1987.

I wonder how many of them are still in existence.

    Clan Clover
In 1985 Clan Cars developed a new, mid-engined version called the Clan Clover. It used an Alfa Romeo 1500cc flat-four engine and gearbox. It is believed that approximately 26 cars were made. Clan Cars ran into financial difficulties and went into receivership and ceased trading in 1987.

Seems 1987 was a bad year for Irish car manufacturers.

There are a few still extant, by all accounts; here's a current thread on the subject over in Octane.ie:
    http://www.octane.ie/forum/showthread.php?t=835

There's even an old (locked) thread on them here:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=199236

At least one of the posters in the Boards.ie thread is still posting in the Octene.ie one.

Dennison(the trailer co.) made trucks at a factory in Rathcoole in the 70's made about 300 before switching to trailers.

Timoney technologies in Navan make all terrain fire tenders(as seen in airports and are reputed to be the best available) they also make armoured personnel carriers called the Bushmaster (vids on youtube)

I do believe that was the name alright, I read something about in an article given to me by my mother from "Ireland's Own". Hegarty's in Killarney build truck & Commercial bodies too.

And there are a good few Agricultural manufacturing facilites in Ireland too as any one who visits the ploughing champsionships will see.

There is good expertise in Ireland except it is very fragmented compared to somewhere like Bavaria where if you throw a stone you will hit somebody with manufacturing expertise.

Wasn't there a Motor Company in Abbeyleix, Bramley Motor Co. or similar? Opened in about 1905, don't know what they produced though.
