Is this a codec issue or a WMP fails issue? I've only had the problem recently

    Any halp?

Can't really tell you how the V0 files are encoded either.

Odds are good that much more info is needed for an answer. I pretty much never encode at V0 as I'm happy enough with V1 and sometimes 2 but WMP should be OK with any file encoded properly.

Ideally, knowing what encoder (and what front-end) was used would help. The file itself keeps that information so it's discoverable using a free app like this.

It could be any number of things but IMHO here are the most likely:
    • Corrupt mp3 file - forget about it, you're boned
    • Corrupt header (surprisingly common). Delete the headers/tags using any of the common editors, or drag the file into winamp where hopefully it'll open even if it doesn't play and you can delete the headers from there, putting them back yourself. If it was only a corrupt header, at that point it'll play.
    • May be a different format, just with an mp3 extension (silly as it seems, this sometimes happens with downloaded stuff). For simplicity's sake, assume the file is dead.

I'm assuming you didn't encode the file yourself given that you don't know what was used to encode it. With that in mind, it could be any of the above. If downloaded, corrupt file is the most likely, followed by the others.

Or there's actually a problem with your WMP but if it plays most files and just not a few, that's far less likely than any of the above. If you're really pushed, drop me a PM, I'll send you my email address and you can send me a random one of the non-playing files so I can have a look at it (as you'd expect it could take me a few days to get back to you with an answer though)

Now I can't suspect it's any of those since the MP3's open perfectly in VLC, they're from what.cd and people have downloaded them before, so they're not transcodes/wrong file format or anything.

dBpoweramp is telling me the encoder used was LAME 3.98r
