Does anyone know if headrests are legally required for the front seats of a vehicle? Haven't been able to find anything definitive so far.

    Hi Ray,
there is nothing mentioned in the NCT test procedure about front head rests. See page 12 here:

    http://www.ncts.ie/nctmanual.pdf

My 1976 Mini never had them.

    There may be insurance implications.

I remembering they were a requirment when doing my NCT yet I saw a car in Ballina Mayo roll out of the NCT centre with a cert a few days later. Different test centre but the same rules should apply.

I know for the driving test, if the car is supposed to have headrests, they had to be there.

We had an '83 mini and there weren't slots for headrests so I don't think I would have need the for the test. Modern cars all have headrests so I suppose they're required. Dunno about the NCT thing, maybe ring them? I don't know how friendly they are to such enquiries...

I'd be more worried about breakign your neck in a crash.

Whiplash would be more likely. Headrests are supposed to meet the top of your ears to be safe. Don't know if or how that is legislated.

Cheers gents. I'm looking at swapping the passenger bench seat in a van for a captain's style seat that I have lying round. The seat is a few years old , perfect nick but was never equipped with a headrest. I don't think whiplash will be an issue. I'll need to take measurements to be sure but the back looks higher than normal and it supports my head, not sure about taller guys yet. The main problem I see is that the DOT testers see no headrest and automatically fail it.

Needs some more research I think. Thanks again.

VW Transporter. The passenger seats are incredibly uncomfortable to sit in for any length of time. I have a a couple of better seats available - lumbar adjustments, runners, recliners etc - which I could put in pretty easily but I don't want to put anything in that's unsafe, illegal, or both. I might just head down to the VW dealer and see what's available off the shelf.
