Quick! Call the, um firemen?

Whatever you do, don't call 999, unless the garda has call waiting...

Gardaí are allowed to do it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,536 ✭✭✭Mark200

    Yeah ^

It's not illegal for them to. Just like it's not illegal for ambulance drivers

do as we say not as we do..........................

They are not applicable to the road laws. They are also trained to a much higher standard of driving then the average road user.

The normal motorist in Ireland is a danger to everybody else. Hence, no use of phone.

I've also seen children on the phone while driving:pac:

If you can read this, you're too close!

    Considering that:

    a) the vast majority of them are driving on "Chief's Permission"

    and...

    b) for the rare minority that have passed the Advanced Driving Course, yaking on the mobile isn't a covered topic...

    ...what's the excuse? Sorry, none.

You need to pass a driving course to be allowed drive a patrol car and it's pretty tough.

the "excuse" is that Gardai are exempt from the Road traffic laws while working, that's also why Gardai can speed, and break red lights, and everything else that goes with responding to emergency calls,

the reason for doing it is the VHF unsecure radio system, big calls are given out over the phone, also Gardai have to put every incident they go to on pulse, so as to keep Gardai on the street there is a call centre to put on this information.

so yes before anyone asks, the calls would be work based, Gardai will stop using phones once computer systems are put in cars like in the US and a secure radio system is provided.

Pssst... when has a member of the public ever been run down by a Garda car and killed?

    *think*

    Oh wait.

I'm glad this came up. One morning last week in Drumcondra 3 bike cops stopped the traffic while a cop car game speeding down Drumcondra road, the one driving had one hand on the wheel and one holding her phone - driving past a school ffs!

Rules of the road do not apply to the Gardaí in the execution of their duties, with damn good reason to.

Want them to stick to the speed limit while trying to rescue your arse as well? :pac:

Why use capitals as if to say you have pics or video of them doing it. They Could be doing anything, calling their mom or contacting fire ambulance or even using the radio, it's what they do.

Should they role model good driving, yes they absolutely must.
    Do they?
There are many that have do not display a consistent level of skilled driving. They become complacent. They are meant to be able to drive with advanced road craft skills. Rarely do i see these being used. They should exhibit prefect driving.

I seen a Garda eating lunch the other day. I pay his wages! He shouldn't be eating in McDonalds !

Talking about the guards eating from McDonalds, I found it funny to see three banguardi drive up a very busy Grafton street to stop off for their burger and chips.

The reason they were using a phone more than likely as foinse mentioned, is cos the radios are shít as is most of our equiptment, hence any scrote in the street can scan into the garda radio bands, and listen to what we're saying. Hence we use mobile phones. When the government cough up for a secure, safe digital system then we wont need to use phones.

Absolute nonsense. YOu were calling in a takeaway order for collection and you know it!

Folks, the exemption from the rules of the road for emergency response drivers is not a blanket exemption. On duty Gardai, fireman and ambulance crews can still be prosecuted for dangerous and careless driving etc...

Have you ever considered that when a civilian has a very good reason to break the speedlimits or break a red light when possible without endangering others ( let's say bringing a critically ill relative to a hospital ) not too many Gardai would start prosecution procedures and not too many judges would be inclined to convict.

Were you in the car with him then?

Random, no, and I didn't make any such insinuations. Fact is that in the legislation banning the use of handheld phones by drivers emergency services personnel is explicitly exempt from this rule as operating communication equipment is a vital aspect of their job ( keep in mind that a lot of rural Gardai patrol on their own ). By the way I'm not trying to deny that there's probably some abuse of that exemption.

All the Garda do all day long is break redlights, harrass law abiding citizens and call in takeaway orders. I seen a Garda pull out his baton once!

    This is AH.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,777 ✭✭✭meathstevie

Sure it was a baton ? They aren't calling themselves mules for no reason at all :D

    HAHA
    Thats utter bull$hit
Most Gardai don't even know how to use an indicator
And when they do they don't swtich it off

And they're usually fat. How are they going to run after anyone?! They should exhibit a proper diet too. :D

Nothing like some bastard in a big truck prattling away on his mobile whilst steering round a corner with his pie-hand.

I don't have a problem with it too much, I have seen it quite a lot though. If it is work related then no problem, if it isn't then I would have a problem, but how are we to tell exactly? I know, we should have the government invest hundreds of millions to tap their mobiles and see what the story is, yea?
