Looking at some 1994-1995 JD 6400's. Most are around 7000-8000hrs. Seller looking for around 17k euro for one particular tractor that is fully resprayed and refurbished inside.

What kind of average lifespan would the engine on these have? We have an old JD2140 which died after 14000hours and never gave us any bother.

I always heard that most tractor engines should have a lifespan of 12k to 14k hours if they are treated well.

If the engine was properly looked after, i.e. serviced fairly regulary then you should get 12-14k hours without much problem. The brakes tend to pack in on those Deeres after 6-7k hours though so I'd be paying closer attention to that as getting that particular problem sorted is an expensive job.
