Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone has recommendations for diving in Malaysia?

I'm a beginner and will be looking to do the open water PADI course. I'll be travelling solo also so somewhere set up for backpackers would be ideal aswell...

    Tnx

Paulo Tioman on the east coast is setup for Backpackers and diving. Worth checking out. It's easily reached by Bus and scheduled fast boats from the mainland. It's also a cheap place for doing the PADI courses.

Great thanks for that Pigeon, do you by any chance know any reputable companies for PADI training, I heard some stuff about piracy thats the reason I ask!

It's been a few years since I was there so I can't recommend based on personal experience. You should be able to check for PADI training centres online to ensure
they're legitimate. As for actual pirates they're only operating on more remote islands and areas mostly around Boreno, penisular Malaysia has had a few reports of piracy but nothing much targeted at small boats so I wouldn't be unduely concerned about them.
